I am surprised no one has mentioned that Frank Shorter doubled in 10,000 (5th) and marathon (I hope you know) in Munich. They were also seven days apart.

Rupp is not a lock to make the team at 5k. If he were, I would say there isn't much of a chance of him running the marathon. However, since he could conceivably not be top 3 in the 5k, he may want to have a backup plan.
That being said...to the poster suggesting the triple...If I were Nike, I would be pushing that for both Rupp and Farah.
"In 2012, Mo Farah and Galen Rupp won the gold and silver medals in the 10k, and were a mere 3 seconds from doing the same in the 5k where Mo Farah won his second gold medal. In Rio 2016, they'll both attempt to do something that hasn't been done in over 60 years - the triple. Just do it."
Even if they fail, the hype that it would generate would be crazy.
I just punched Rupps numbers in the McMillan calculator. Wow.
26:44 gives me 2:05:26 potential for the Marathon. So for the trials it should be between him and Hall (2:04 AR record), everyone else would be far behind (what's Mebs PR, 2:09 lol).
Should be an exciting race to watch between two honest and Christian runners battling it out. I can't wait.
Salazar and Rupp have learned from Farah's experience. Farah became a much better and faster runner after his 2:08 London debut.
Rupp will solo a 63-min half in Portland. He will enter the Trials. He will be instructed to run with the lead group until he either crashes and/or feels comfortable enough to finish strongly. That will be the plan.
Depending on the result at the Trials, they will determine the Marathon. I feel that the doping scandal will impact more marathoners than track runners (i.e., more guys like Kipsang, Kimetto, Makau not running as fast as previously, but the tracksters like Alamirew, Ndiku, Gebrhiwet, Kejelcha, will still be a threat).
Marathon is always wide open.
It is way too late for Rupp to start running the marathon at top level.
Off season in college would have been a good time to start, but now way too late.
Even so, it would be good for him to do this, but I seriously doubt that he will.

I understand there isn't a big Debute Payout but if he runs the trials and tanks he won't get as much for his next one. First marathon payouts are based on speculation and if he runs one for free and it doesn't go well he won't get near as much on his first major.
I disagree, as his chances to do well are much better for the second one.
Oh, good. Maybe he'll get a shoe deal out of this.
It will be interesting to see how much effort he puts into this race. Maybe it is testing the waters for the longer races, as Mo has already done. Assuming Rupp is in decent shape, he could do a half at 5 min pace like a tempo. How much below 5 per mile is the question.
Is anyone else of consequence running this race? I find it hard to believe he would run this just for fun, unless it's some charity he's supporting.

The question we ask is where does he have a better shot at a gold medal. The marathon may at first glance seem like a ludicrous answer but when you think about it, it becomes more of a tossup.

Can you imagine being a 1:08 guy, showing up to the Foot Traffic Holiday Half Marathon expecting to blow away the field, and then seeing Rupp on the starting line? Biggest face palm moment in history.
Rupp will be 30 at the 2016 games. Rio is his best shot, age-wise, to run the marathon and do well (i.e., medal).
If he has not developed the kick needed to win an international 10,000 by now, he likely never will. Even doping won't get him that kind of kicking speed. Face reality, it's time to move up to the marathon.
How awesome would it be if Rupp wins the Marathon and Mo Farah wins the 5,000/10,000 and we have three gold medals in the USA.
Kenya can have the steeple, lol.

Forget about the feasibility of the double at the Games, I'm not convinced Rupp has any better than a 50% chance of making the marathon team. It will take a 2:09 and while he's eventually going to run that, his being able to do so right now in a championship situation is not certain. A LOT can happen in the marathon. He is a virtual lock in the 10k, why bother with the marathon? All the good Kenyans will be in the marathon anyways, his medal chances are vastly better at 5km than the marathon.
Who's going to run a 2:09 at the trials?

Hall doesn´t have the American record - KK does.

You guys are too funny. When he won Boston a couple of years ago you were all so proud that an American won and now suddenly that doesn't count for anything anymore?
I don't really care, for my taste, they're to SKINNY, so I don't really see a real man when I look at them. There is no BUFFness, no definition, etc.

^^^ This. Distance TRIPLE HYPE!!!^^^
Rio 2016 schedule:
Rupps main race 10000-Saturday August 13. 21:55pm
5000 round 1- Wednesday August 17 10:05am
5000 final- Saturday August 20 22:25pm
Full 'Thon- Sunday August 21 9:30am
Rupp triples. The 10k isn't going to be all out from the gun. At its hardest it will be 8k of jogging, 2k of racing.
3 full recovery days, 5k round 1. Again not an all out racing effort until the last 1k.
2 full recovery days then 5k final. Again not racing until last 1k.
10 HOURS rest and Full 'Thon. Rupp has a conservative first half and gradually moves up and is in medal contention the final 5k just like Meb.
One thing that makes this a possibility is his YEARS of uninterrupted training. Recovery shouldn't be an issue as the track races will be mostly tempo runs finished off with 1500-->800 effort. Rupp does workouts after his races. All very possible.
Galen, Alberto, Phil what do you think???? Main event is first. Every after is for fun. SIGNIFICANTLY more publicity than competing at world indoors.
Just do it!
Mo would never try the triple. He already knows he is not a marathon contender. Who knows Rupp might be, though. I say try a marathon and see how it pans out. If promising, I see absolutely no reason why he could not 10/Mar double. 5K is a long shot for gold - I say it's disposable.
Time is ticking for Rupp. He has silver and wants gold. This is probably his best-chance Olys. I had always thought his style might just shine in the marathon. Try the trials, if underperforming, drop out and go 5/10k. No brainer really.
