Great call on Davis, 22nd place ,AND he beat Tamagno!
Guess I had that one coming, Henry!
Jon Davis got out great in first mile. Was still riding just behind lead pack of 5 at 1.5. Faded after that to almost 30th and then closed hard to get 22nd.... while Austin Tamagno finished 26th. Both were disappointed, I'm sure.
Jon told me after his Foot Locker Midwest victory last weekend that he injured his right (?) leg IT band in his sprint victory over Veatch at Terre Haute. He did no running that next week and cross trained in pool. Trained gingerly (30 mpw) the next week going into Kenosha but still outkicked 4 other guys over last 200 at Foot Locker Midwest to win.... in mud and some hills. That was amazing to see. Which gave me hope for today.
He beat Ben Veatch (Carmel, IN) both times with strong finishes. Veatch got outkicked again today but at least got 2nd. Veatch's finish reinforces my gut that Davis should have been in Top 3 and his kick would have been better than both Veatch and Clinger.... IF HE HAD STILL BEEN THERE.... but he wasn't. A kick is no good if you get dropped. Jon called me from the hotel and said the first mile took too much out of him and that he got a slight side stitch at half way and fell off back of the lead pack. That is what I saw in online video as well. I think he also got mentally discouraged after 2 miles (but that is only my guess) as it was his first defeat of the year. He has not had a really hard workout since NXN qualifier... a week after the Illinois State Meet.... except for the Foot Locker regional race due to the injury. He said he is trying to have one hard workout and one medium workout this next week and go back into Foot Locker and give it his best. But, if Andrew Hunter goes out really hard at San Diego.. I doubt that Jon will go with the lead pack now. He will try to run steady pace and try to race back up into Top 5-10 in 2nd half if that happens... because he has gotten just too detrained over past 3 weeks. An injury or an illness in November is really bad timing for all these runners. But, part of the game. Jon's win and good time at Kenosha fooled me into still thinking he could still win today. His 2 consecutive victories over Veatch is still a head scratcher...but the finals is what counts and kudos to Ben today. And, especially to Casey Clinger!
