I am sorry - I was not aware of those tales about his mooching - and if they are true, then I would not support the guy so much.
I am puzzled by your assertion that he comes from a privileged background, because that is not what I had heard previously.
Most Moroccans who run come from under privileged backgrounds - Aouita, Mourhit, Laali, and others - and they ran, first of all, to get out of the poverty trap, because in Morocco, the good runners are housed and lodged at the National Training Center in Rabat, and then housed free of charge (board and lodging) in Ifrane, high up in the Atlas mountains. I know this, because I have taken a couple of trips there and seen for myself.
I think Trafeh if fundamentally a good person, but he has made some wrong choices in life which he is trying to rectify now, by reaching out to joggers and to high school kids, and most of that coaching is free of charge. So he has a benevolent, altruistic side, as most people do, from that part of the world. A Muslim will always say 'My home is your home' if you come to visit.
I think there may have been some cultural misunderstandings between Mo and his American hosts. In Morocco, if you have friends, you show up anytime without making an appointment - and he probably did not realize that this is not the 'American way' - I am not condoning what he did, but trying to put things into context.
