Flotrack recently posted a "workout" video featuring the defending "world champ" beer miler Corey Gallagher. This workout takes place at the site of this year's Beer Mile World Championships... a parking lot in Austin.
Flotrack wants this event to be taken seriously but their WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP is in a PARKING LOT. What a joke.
The Beer Mile WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS are in a PARKING LOT

I am guessing it has something to do with the parking lot being that of the Austin newspaper, right? Not really sure why they can't get tracks for this kind of thing. Can't UT let them use the track for a small fee and a waiver?
Plenty of private tracks in the areas as well.
Why a parking lot? -
The event is a JOKE.
-
Yeah the event is a joke but the unfortunate thing is that Flotrack is pushing the Beer Mile so much and forsaking the rest of the ACTUAL sport. Sure their lead article right now is relevant (Kenyan officials suspended) but then scroll down almost every other video is a beer mile video. It's disgusting.
-
Doesn't count if it's not on a track.
What a joke. -

I agree. I have never understood their fascination with the beer mile, and REALLY don't understand their promotion of it over and above the actual sport they are supposed to be covering. When my annual subscription runs out, I will not be renewing. -

It's not a fascination with the beer mile, it is a fascination with money, disguised as "growing the sport." Flotrack can pretend to get the public interested, profit, pretend to put that money into something related to track and field, then repeat. -
Flotrack does some cringe-worthy things, but I don't see what's bad about their beer mile stuff. I watched the live feed last year and it was pretty entertaining.

What exactly do you want them to be covering right now? As far as I can tell, they're as up-to-date as anyone is regarding IAAF, Seb Coe, Russian / Kenyan doping, etc. Look at their "News" page and you'll see everything that LR has.
All the big marathons for the year are done. There hasn't been an important track race in months. It's down-time right now in the pro-running world, this is the perfect time to have an event like this.
It takes away ZERO from the ACTUAL sport. -

I disagree, this downtime is exactly when I want them pumping out training videos. No one is racing now, or at least not in any important races, which means they are training hard. You know what's pretty interesting to watch? People training hard. You know what isn't? Mediocre runners drinking in a parking lot. -

If anyone is training hard right now they are an idiot. -
I think a parking lot is the perfect place for an obscure event like a beer mile.
I think there should be more street races like the 150m that Bolt did and the 5th ave mile.
If it starts and finishes in the same place and the distance is accurate, then it's a legit mile event.
It should be in a parking lot outside of a bar, though. -

Agreed. My god some people are anal [email protected] They probably can't get insurance to allow hundreds of people drinking at a track. They will probably set it up so people can easily line the course and sit on bleachers. You know, the kinds of things promotion companies know more about than anal distance runners.
It's just like Crossfit, everybody is jealous of something new. I'll be there tomorrow, and I won't be judging every person there. I'll be drinking beer, laughing as people vomit, looking at the beautiful women Austin always presents to any event, and just having a good time in general. Have fun bitching about beer miles on a forum. -
The beer mile is in the same category as dressing up in a costume for a marathon. I always thought it diminished the sport and sounds like something that a frat boy would enjoy.
-
The only reason a costumed marathoner diminishes the sport for you is that they're running ahead of you the whole way and you're forced to look at them.
-
I'll be there wrote:

Yeah it's not like the OT in the marathon are coming up or anything. -
Would schools be included under this statute?

This.
Also, "training hard" doesn't have to mean crushing intervals every day. I guarantee the vast majority of pros are training hard right now, building a big base, doing solid aerobic workouts like tempos and fartleks, and putting some hill workouts in for strength and speed. Too bad we can't see any of those types of workouts...
