At a meet in 2011 I was trying to break two in the 800 and a good buddy of mine was trying to break 16 in the 5000. We had been teammates and friends through high school and college and still are to this day. I ran a 2:01 and shortly after watched him run a 16:02.
my half pr is 1:20:10, I don't know if it is numbingly close,
but close enough to be annoying. I'm of course
a hobby jogger, so it does not really matter if I ever
dip under 1:20 or not, but man 1:19:59 would be so sweet.
I would always refer to it as 1:19 (never as sub-1:20)
I have a picture of myself crossing the finish line in 2:33:58, however, my official time online is 2:34. This was my one and only marathon, so I have to tell people my PR is 2:34 rather than 2:33.
I spent a long time with a marathon pb of 2:30:02 (I thought I had broken it but the finish line clock was slow) before finally smashing it. In between I also clocked another near miss (20 seconds) and my 10k is just the wrong side of 33:00.
I ran a 17:00.4 5k at the NY Federation meet @ Bowdoin. Guy in front of me even closer to time barrier at 17:00.2. We were both fairly sure we broke 17 but sadly not.
I am frustratingly close to going under the following marks...
18 in the 5k
60 in 10 miles
80 in the half
2.50 in the marathon
30:03 10k on the track, it was at a conference meet where I was paying zero attention to time. I was just focused on racing, I ended up third behind 2 All-Americans so I feeling quite good about myself until I saw my time. Had I known I may have pushed earlier but who knows how that would have ended.

800 - 2:00 (although I've never trained for this event or run it late in the season)

I feel like my story is pretty common. In college my xc 8k PR was in the low 25s (although I split faster than that in a track 10k). The first time I got on the roads I knocked about 30 secs off.
My 10-mile PR is 1:00:06. I ended up underestimating my fitness and running a big negative split (30:30 for the first 5 mi, 29:36 for the second 5 mi). I think I would have gone sub-60 with more even pacing.
At one point, my half PR was 1:25:01 and that stung for awhile. Fortunately I have lowered it since then.
My 8th grade year in cross country all I wanted to do was run a sub 11 two mile. Sure enough last race of the season my official time was 11:00.00. Sad part is I can remember exactly in the race where I let up just a little bit.

My only PR close to any "barrier" is a 34:02 10k.
My goal for my senior year of highschool cross country was to run sub-17 on our home course. Our last meet of the season was at home, and I had been running great all season. With 400 to go I stumbled up a hill, and crossed the line in 17:00, one of the most frustrating experiences of my life.
At one point my half PR was 1:30:05. Thankfully I have since broken 1:30 several times.
I had a 5:00.14 mile PR for a while. Also a 17:01 5K PR for a decade or more.
All through my 40's I could never break 5 min in the mile. 5:02 was best but I ran 5:04 +/- 2 sec for about 7 years straight. Now, 5:13 at 54 so that ship has sailed.
Senior year of college xc at a large invite I let a teammate start in front of me on the line cause he said he needs to get out fast, so I let him stand in the box with #1 and #2 runners. I ended up running a 24:01 8k. Maybe it would have made a difference, probably not. We joke about it.

That is funny as I had a runner compete with the *ame times except as having been a 1:57.1 not 1:56. It seems to have been one of those where you may not have actually raced a 1:56.

My senior year in High School I qualified for state in the 800m and the Wednesday before my coach had me run a 600m time trial. Most runners have experienced the runners "high" and that day I ran right at 1:20 flat, but I honestly felt like I could have run 20flat the last 200m(which I wouldn't have btw, but that runners high was a great feeling.) To this day I wish I would have just kept on through and I know I would have broken 1:50. Never did..1:52...regret that time trial 27 years later.
