Watched a 45 year old dude try to out kick a 9 year old at the last 5k I ran. 9 year old smoked him. It was awesome. This was at 21+ minutes, and Mr. Middleaged came on in full blown high school kick with 100m to the finish.

I take offense that a 20 minute 5k is considered hobby jogger level. What has my life become!?

At least don't fret that 20 something minutes isn't your 5k lifetime PR.
The respectful thing to do would be to treat her like any other competitor and try to run his best.
It is definitely bad form to lay on a sprint to catch women or young kids at the finish line. I ran the last 1/2 mile of a 10k with the top female. The clock was ticking down to 36 min flat. I really wanted to break 36, but could tell that the female winner had nothing left. Then, I saw them hold up a finish line tape for the female winner. At that point, I pulled back and let her have her moment. Ended up running 36 even. I have not been able to get under 36 since then and may never be able to as I am now getting closer to 50 than I am to 40. But looking back, I probably would not have even been close to 36 had I not had someone to run with the last 800. So, I have no regrets letting up. Masters runners have had their chance. We are just out there for a few last good runs before the body falls apart.
Precious Roy...your 10K PR is 35:59. I declare it so...the master has spoken.
36 flat. wow you are slow
I've got some questions. Did he impede you with his still attached arm or was he carrying his amputated arm and hit you with that? And, you always go for the pass on the side of the amputation. That is a rookie mistake I thought a masters runner would not make.
At least the guy didn't pimp a kid like some nike sympathizer we all know.
Years ago I was running in a 5 mile race. I caught up with the guy in second place at about the 2 mile point. We ended going shoulder to shoulder for the rest of the way. We agreed to finish together. As we approached the final 100 yards he saw his family cheering for him and went into an all out sprint. Never said a word to me ahead of time. He gapped me but then I began to sprint too, caught him, blew by him and then did a 360 degree pirouette as I crossed the finish line. Never did that before or since.
He came up to me afterwards and tells me I made him look bad in front of his wife and kids. I laughed and reminded him that we agreed to finish together. Next time, I told him, keep your promise.
I'm not sure he got it,
1. I am 46, not 45.2. That little bugger cut me off swerving all over the place.3. I beat him at the rest of the triathlon later--the second leg was shaving and the third leg was drinking beer. WINNER!!!!

I have a similar story, but with a different ending. I was running in a local turkey trot, and with a little over a quarter mile left, saw the lead woman about 50 meters ahead of me. I figured I could catch her and beat her, but did not want to be "that guy" by outkicking her on the last 50 meters, so I slowed into her pace and finished 5 seconds behind her (nice view for the finish, by the way). A few years later, her son is running HS XC for me. Had I been "that guy", it is quite possible she would not have wanted her kid to run for such a jerk. Not sure, but sometimes, losing a 5K battle is worth winning the war.
A 51 year-old woman running 19:59 is pretty legit.
A 45 year-old man? Not so much. (Decent, I guess.)
Sprinting by the superior athlete would be like a 2:20 half marathoner kicking for home to hold off a marathoner finishing at the same time.
Giving the moment to his superior was the right thing to do.
Roy, you should have dove under the banner...and under 36. Everybody gets their moment that way!
