Crossfit is kinda like those Vibram five finger shoes from a few years ago. White people are quickly jumping on the bandwagon and saying Crossfit is great, but a few years from now they will be embarrassed they even tried it.

Why are non-millennials so into talking about what millenials are into? Frankly, I really do not see a whole lot in Millenials that is all that unique. Sure, they have smartphones and are all into social media. But, my parents thought that my generation was all screwy because we played Pac Man and could use the word processor on our Apple IIe instead of having to use a manual typewriter. And my parents' parents thought they were all screwed up because they could listen to Frankie Valli instead of Beethoven and watch Howdy Doody on the television.
Each generation lives in a very different time from the last, but that doesn't make them unique or interesting.
Because there are too many boomers and Gen Xers cheating. They are attracted to sports with integrity.
10/10 y friend for getting 3 LRC hit buttons in one topic. Where is this guy's LR shirt?

Good thing runners are never hurt.
Crosfitters are the same kids that got a trophy for brushing their teeth.
triathlons are fun
you can see fish when you swim
you can break the speed limit on a bike
and then you run.
Because its easier and Millennials are into instant gratification. Forget all that competitive hard running. Just give me my medal that I oh so deserve because I showed up and finished. Yay, I got my medal.! Lets facebook and tweet it everywhere. Yaaaayyyyyy!!! We are so cool.

First two posts in this thread are spot on, and unlike most of the "Millennial" complaint threads (probably from narrowminded misguided old men) these comments actually describe some of the truth of the problem.
We are all connected to each other and so each generation should have the responsibility to consider the heritage of past and do duty. The culture, television and music, etc. of the past decade is new and bad quality and cliche.
Somewhere along the line, young and old failed us.
Those who are now becoming adults and soon to be middle-aged adults, apparently are ignorant of all the good music of years past because else they would know to call a spade a spade and vomit in disgust at lousy new developments.
And the elders and those in authority have not acted responsibly in transmitting virtue and teaching and culture to the younger generation, instead being content to either
a. pillage (i.e. corporations manufacturing this new crap culture and encouraging the demographics youth spending dollar to align its lifestyle thus)
b. bury the head in the sand and live in willful ignorance.
but also
c. keep up with the Joneses and pass these pressures on to younger people (i.e. children as trophies, succeed at all costs).
We get more and more competition and people forget what makes life cool, exciting and enjoyable. More media, more competition, more confusion, more tension and instead of trying to disentangle and figure out what's the problem, how we got here, etc. the answer instead is, compete harder, be more vicious, meanwhile endorsing the "game" that's broken.
I'm talking about culture at wide, beyond the running culture, but what's happened in society is mirrored in the running community (unfortunately, since I thought at least a majority of runners should be different.)
The solution is disincentivized, because we are the most advanced society that has ever lived and we have the power to summon all our dreams, sort the good from the bad, and share and get other people's goods too. What we have are many people with such "gifts," long forgotten or languishing in latency because there is no structural outlet for it.
Many members and actors in and of society are to blame for these slippery runaway processes and crappy structures unconducive to good things. After the early days of the internet, corporations have made deliberate moves to disempower people of freedom in cyberspace and in computing and software technology.
Civilization is living. Life doesn't merely "go on." What skeletons and issues remain unsolved do not fix themselves but come back to haunt us. History demonstrates this time and time again.
Still, I haven't said anything about the running and endurance sport and general sporting community.
So "Why can't they appreciate the deeper joys of running?" (and this goes for a fair chunk of people who are runners exclusively, too!) I've been wondering this my whole damn life because I'm always trying to get "something started" like Michael Jackson. I'll be trying hopefully til I'm 80 years old, that's how much it matters. I hope other people can wake up and do the same. There are many eager runners who want to run fast, and too many of them in proportion to the amount of desire out there, for community building and art-making.
I also believe that some of the pouring of otherwise good runners into crossfit and triathlons is not just the joining into the "new culture" but reflects a bio-psychological imbalance. I was thinking this today, as I'm currently dealing with a rather serious leg strain that has caused me two weeks of pain from power lifting injury and overwork from exercise, family, work and housekeeping and life stress and an illness recently. There is so much competition amid garbage social culture and structures, that nobody wants to deal with, that this, like built up flatulence in the body, creates tension that has to express and escape somewhere. The further we get into confusion and away from core principles and scientific and spiritual foundations, the more malnutrition and imbalance is created. To ease the dissonance and malaise, some runners have decided "more more." Doing extra and additional forms of exercise will get you high, yes it will. Yet I say, there is a dark side, as there are meanings to the natural cycle of training and repair, much pressure of the conspicuous display of vanity in our culture and little realistic talk about the costs of PEDs and overtraining and extreme sporting. There are many unnatural bodies out there and its easy to train unhealthily. Unhealthy training leads to prolonged chronic pain which leads to the pursuit of analgesic relief, from pain killers, recreational drugs, to more exercise, more sex, more acquisition, etc.
Sometimes I wonder how many different people are making posts under the persona of Xfit douches. Whoever started the trend on LRC, kudos to you.
Gotta love the extremes people put themselves thru after their competitive possibilities are done. What's wrong with a great life balance of about 30 miles a week of fun running, a couple hrs/ week of light lifting, several sessions of yoga, stretching, eating well, and exploring new and very good wines every night? Add in a few hours of good reading and a few hours of quality social life with friends...an hour or two of reading letsrun threads and articles....that's pretty much a great life.
What a crock of existential bull$hit .
After you have done your 3h half mary and 7h mary, what is left to do?
Might as well get into crossfit or triathlons, or Ultras..
Crossfit is popular because young people like to show off and many need validation. Women like to workout in groups as it creates a sisterhood. Guys like Crossfit because they can show off in front of a group of women and it's acceptable to join this type of group training vs say a Zumba class.
If Crossfit got rid of the group workout there would be few women. If you lose the women you lose the men.
Alan
Actually, if you look at the demographics of both events, millennial participation is quite small. Gen Xers are where it is high.

"Professional Cross-Fitters" on TV... don't do cross-fit. They train in powerlifting, strong-man, and olympic weightlifting.
"Cross-fit Coaches" drop a couple grand to get certified in a weekend. That's it.
Participants drop a significant chunk of change to BADLY perform complex movements for AMRAP sets. This is just silly. Cross-fitters are hurt constantly.
Even if you are GOOD at cross-fit, it just means that you are a good gym rat. That's all.
It will go by the wayside to be replaced by something else.
I understand everything you're saying and don't understand how it is different from running.
Then you DON'T understand what I'm saying.
A snatch, clean, or front squat with hundreds of pounds, done incorrectly in a fatigued state is MUCH more likely to permanently injure you than running.
While running, if you fatigue, your form breaks down and you slow or stop.
In lifting, if your form breaks down and you lose core tightness or positioning, you could literally become paralyzed or permanently injured.
Complex lifting movements need coaching, especially for the novices that are diving into cross-fit. These are the "hobby joggers" of the lifting world.

This.
It's like high-school co-ed track and field all over again for people that are past their prime.
Alan, good post :)

I don't disagree, but is there anything wrong with trying to get laid? Isn't that the goal of any species? Running 100 mpw and walking around frail with no testosterone isn't exactly consistent with Darwinism.
