Sampras actually went pro at 16 and did play in some warmup tournaments prior to the US open. This is possibly the most likely true element for Troy Price's story.
However it is also likely the most verifiable via archived newspaper results and tourney records. Assuming it happened.
Also the "ranked" aspect could be checked but they used to rank like the top 800 and even then regional rankings applied as well.
The strangest thing about the Troy Price story to me is why it was ever even a story. Nothing but a self promoting article on an IT guy who is pretty boring. Why run the article at all? Odd.
No sh*t Sherlock. Actually a fine post. The trouble with Dr. Greg Price of Troy, AL claim is that Pete Sampras was 19 in 1990 when he won the US Open. Greg Price was 18 in 1992, based on him being 41 now.
So which year did Greg Price take a set off Sampras and how old was he when he did it? Sampras would have been 21 when Greg Price was 18.
If Greg Price took a set off Sampras, the best he could do collegiately was play as Troy friggin' State? Hello, Stanford calling.
