I've run 7 marathons in a year though one of them was a 50 kilometer, plus ran 46 races in a year.
And maybe your old lady would like to run in the Olympics. But she's too slow at 10k, and you haven't the faintest idea how to get her there in the marathon.

No one is comparing Thweatt to Dillon at this point.

Did I say that xxx. For a guy with a university degree you aren't too bright.
If you want her to run for the U.S. in the marathon, pay her.
Waaaaaa.... people are calling me outtt.... Mommyyyyyyyy!!!!!

What? First, I'm a blue collar guy without a degree. Who is xxx?

Second, don't insult my family.
Third, only I run in my family.
Fourth, that post about 300k appearance fees being rubbish was my first post on the thread. My only mistake is this is a topic for another thread. As far as the original subject, it is a big decision. I wish the athlete in question luck. They've earned the difficult decision.
But as far as I know, no distance runner except maybe two Olympic medalists from London, makes anywhere near 300k yearly in combined fees and sponsorships...

...aaanddd, were any of those in the Oly trials? Did you win USATF XC? There's racing and there's racing.

I understand the concern, but do we really know what runners are capable of?
Let's see how Kawauchi does in Fukuoka. Clearly, he left nothing on the NYM course. He ran the last 400m in 61s. He's doing another marathon next month and he WILL go all out again for that.
Thweatt was 7th and Kawauchi 6th so the comparison is there.

No kidding
do we really know how many? wrote:

You can't compare how one person recovers from a marathon to another. Over the last few years Kawauchi has shown a history of banging out 2:10s on very little rest. Over the same few years Theeatt has shown a history of getting injured.
Given her injury history I think skipping the marathon trials is the right call for Thweatt. She'd likely rush her recovery and her training and end up injured. Yes, she probably has a slightly better chance of making it in the marathon, but also a much greater chance of getting injured. Plus if she doesn't make it in the 10k she can double back and try the 5k, which is usually after the 10k. Maybe different for an Olympic year, but last year US women's 5k was weaker than the 10k. With rounds and others doubling from the 10k or 1500, the strength she's consistently shown would be an advantage. I think Troop also understates her speed. She's run like 4:10, which is pretty impressive for someone also running 2:28.

3 marathons in 10 months is crazy and would def do harm to her long term. Im sure she really wants to qualify for the olympics but having a long career is far more important. Some people have trouble looking at the bigger picture that's okay but don't knock on someone who is able to see that bigger picture.
The 40 year old Meb is just crazy then. And isn't good at long term plans and shouldn't have had a long career.
Not good at the big picture.
I understand that if her focus is on the 10,000, she should not run the Trials marathon and just prepare for the track Trials.
That's what most of the 10,000m runners are doing.
Or even say that they don't feel comfortable gearing back up for a February marathon at the risk of harming her track training.
But saying to race 3 marathons in 10 months (which would only happen if she actually made the team) would cause long term harm is crazy.
Most of us know that it's the training that is the cause of almost all running injuries, not the racing.
