Did Anyone Else See That? MLS Playoffs: Portland Timbers 11 Penalty Kicks Over Kansas City

Weldon and I are sharing a hotel room in NYC. He was obsessed with watching the game on Univision 2 (on the PC). I thought he was joking but apparently he went to a game this summer with our cousin in Portland.

When it went to overtime, he wanted to go to a bar. I'm like, "We've got work to do. No bar is going to have that channel anyway."

I did watch the OT. It was entertaining as there were two goals. The PKs were ridiculous. Every single guy on the two teams kicked. I think the losing team had at least 3 chances to win it outirhgt. One of them hit the post. Another hit both posts.

It came down to the goal keepers. Unreal.

Pretty sure you two were the only people in America watching. I still have never figured out why they continue to show that sport on tv. I remember when Pele was going to make it the next great American sport.

Too many people are using ad blockers....LRC revenues harmed. Plus they need some twin time together.

Insanely entertaining finish! In the last few years SKC have won 3 finals on pks, but their luck ran out last night.

Thoughts on who could win it all? Red Bulls are my pick--consistent throughout the year and a solid lineup front to back.

Good game but as a Sporting fan it was wrenching.

Cheering against Portland in their next game after some of their dirty plays.

1) open your eyes. There is a huge soccer demographic in the US- ratings and attendance are good for global soccer. Major networks are showing live Euopran games every weekend (not just cable).

2) millions of Americans are soccer fans but not MLS fans. MLS is designed to make money for a small group of people- it is not designed to develop the US as a national team or "grow the game". The league has been around 20 years and the excuse is "give it time to improve in quality". 20 years! And it is not improving as fast as the play of the reat of the world.

Soccer is the sport of the future in america and it always will be.

My observation as a resident of Portland, based on the large number of Timbers stickers, shirts, etc, and the fact that they easily sell out every home game in a park that holds around 21,000, is that soccer is doing pretty well (at least in Portland), but that media coverage is perhaps a little biased towards the more traditional American sports.

Because watching a bunch of people running around a field for 2 hours scoring one goal (and having what looks like an epileptic seizure in celebration) is much more exciting than watching a few guys run around a 400 meter track for 13 minutes.

The MLS is cool and underrated. I watch it and go to games sometimes even though I never played soccer and don't know much about the game.

It then went penalty kicks and went 11 kicks until the goalies squared off against one another. This was after there had been 6 chances for one team to win it including one chance by Kansas City that went off both posts but somehow didn't go in.

The Portland keeper made his and then stopped the KC kicker on his.

I'm not sure you know what sudden death means.....
