If you have to run with a slower group on harder days, you can get a better workout at a slower pace by:
-wearing thick heavy restrictive clothing
-running on uneven rough surface next to the road/trail
-holding your breath
-taking all turns wide
-running with a golf, ping pong ball in your mouth. Or big wad of gum
-talking nonstop
-eating a huge meal right before the run
-stopping frequently to "pee", then sprinting to catch up
-carrying 72 fluid ounce hydration pack
-run with rocks in your hands
-wear big clunky heavy shoes.
Do all this, and you can very easily add at least a minute per mile to your threshold pace.
The difference between times of you and the others is not relatively great.
Go easy on easy days. Hard by yourself or ahead of others on hard days.
Be discreet. Share the water. Build team spirit and unity.
