I don't think there are too many college guys who could've run 23's on UW-Parkside's course yesterday. It's fairly challenging as is but also had a strong wind that hits you on the big grass uphill.

That's pretty spot on, essentially one of Truman's last runners came up behind Keller (UIndy Runner who was DQ'd) and shoved him in the back, almost knocking him to the ground. Keller got upset and ripped the kids number off his jersey, the kid started freaking out and tackled Keller by the neck to the ground and was on top of him about to start throwing punches. So I tackled the Truman kid, and told him to calm down, got some choice words and a punch to the face in return. Nothing was initiated by UIndy athletes, Keller ended up getting tackled from behind and on his back from the initial altercation, and after I rolled over from breaking it up, the kid pounced on me. To the guys saying I can't take a punch, I'd like to see you get punched, give the field a 45 second head start and come back to 17th overall.
Just ignore them, they are the dumbest people on here. Luckily you are OK, and you finished the race and you will race again. Based on what you told us, you handled the situation well and the way everyone should.
Unfortunately, this kid did not have your smarts. Too bad for him that one minute of stupidity is probably going to cost him a lot for a long time.

Ummm, there's well over 100 LR posters with better than 14:30 who are 18 or under!
Think harder. He said "by the time you're 18". I take that to mean when you turn 18, as in ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. How many Americans can run 14:30 halfway through their senior year?
Probably about 100. And his comment meant that the NCAA would be filled out by the foreigners who can run that fast mostly ... which is all accurate.
Did you run 14:30 on the track when you were 17? I did not. I ran under 15 before I turned 18 but there are very few in America that can run 14:30 or faster at 17.
Once upon a time many decades ago when a man punched you in the face you at bare minimum tried to kick his ass.

hey bud get your facts right. 1. this race is an 8k to compare it to a 5k is silly. 2. this course is a very tough race. 3 sometimes your slowest runners on the team can be the most motivating to the top guys. you also never know what some one could be battling or coming back from. and even though you are correct in assuming this was a bad time and yes this guy does not deserve to be running.
1. it is an 8k 2.really hard course 3. even the slowest guys on a team can make a biggest impact. not agree this guy should be kicked off the team.

The kid who got sucker punched was trying to break it up.
His buddy should have wailed on the guy for punching his teammate.
Who finishes the race after all of this? What has been the response of the university? Saw this in HS once in the middle of a physical mile with 2 sub 4:15 guys. Ended up fighting in the infield. Both got suspended and not allowed to finish the season.
Similar thing happened many years ago when I was running in college. I grabbed the guy who'd hit my teammate and I did not pound his sku;; uin, causing a riot. No, I restrained him there in a headlock till the coaches came over and broke it up.
Truman State was 4th place over all at the 2001 XC Championships. They sent a team to Nationals the following year as well. So I would say Truman was decent for a few years past 2000. Things are not what they used to be but scholarships have also been drastically cut. That is part of the reason why Truman moved out of the great MIAA to the new conference.
Hi to all the Truman runners reading this post.

This is one of the dumbest comments I've ever read on these messages boards, and there are some stellar ones.

Was that the team with Helbig, Rosario, Heinecker, and Doering?
Truman was once a school that people wanted to run at. The reason they suck now is the coaching, not the scholarships. Timothy schwegler doesn't care about the athletes or how they perform. He'll only treats someone well if they follow him blindly.

GLVC handed out punishments today. Both Terreri and Keller were suspended. UIndy's gonna need some big-time efforts to make Nationals now.
Here is an Indy Star article by David Woods on the suspension

Late 80s early season HS invite. One of the opposing teams was pulling a bunch of over the top BS against us and other teams; yelling "cover him" and intentionally cutting off runners before the single-track parts of the course, then slowing down to let team members ahead create a gap, zig-sagging like morons and actually stepping on the back of people's legs (the physical contact seemed unintentional for the most part but they were running right up the back of and around people), and yelling out other stupid $hit instead of just racing. They were a decent team too. I got done with the race and watched the rest of our team finish. One of our non-scorers was a gangly wrestler who came through the chute, went straight up to a guy from the other team and decked him. One punch - done. Kid went down, grabbed his face and ran off . When we were leaving, the team approached ours and starting talking more $hit. The wrestler who decked the kid at the chute did not say a word. Instead, he grabbed a kid who was mouthing off by his pony tail and whipped his head into a fence. A small fight started between the teams - more like pushing and talking, but the wrestler was looking to do more damage on the kid with the pony tail. My coach caught up with us and I saw his ham-sized arm (he was an all-American discus thrower) grab the wrestler by the back of the neck, lift him off the ground and throw him like a shot-put. End of conflict.
We ran against that team a few more times that season. No zig-zag racing or cutting people off. No words spoken and no violence. The wrestler was given a stern warning and one more strike you're out by the coach and behaved himself thereafter. True story. I wonder how that would go over in a meet in 2015?
Yes. And also Brian McQueary, Mike Nelson, Mark Debold, and me, Patrick Boyle. Matt Helbig was on the team but didn't run at Nationals that year because he was just coming back from an injury. I'm not going to lie, it is making my day to think about Nationals that year, post about it, and have a person actually reply about it. Nationals was one of my favorite days. It helps me make it through the softball games I'm getting killed in by former college baseball players. I think, "I should really start running again, I was pretty good at that." :-)
I coached at a small school in New England in the 90's. I had a kid who was very quiet, but it felt like he could rip your arm off when he shook your hand. One meet is on a course almost entirely in the woods, out of sight. After, this same kid is just standing alone, with a red , angry face. I ask the others what's up. they explain that some kid from the other team kept punching him and he backed down, thinking I would get mad if he got into a fight.
I talked to the team at the next practice, after thinking about this overnight. I made it clear that they are not to start trouble, but, I said, "stand up for yourself if you feel you are right. And remember buys, there are no referees in the woods. You are on your own."
Well, as luck would have it, we raced this team again two years later on the very same course. It was tri-meet. Several kids on our teams mentioned the incident from before, and I made it clear to this kid that he was a senior and from what I heard he had every right to pummel this kid. At the end of the race, nothing is said and then...wait for it...the coach from the team with the instigator comes to me and says ; " We have a problem. My kid says your kid pushed him over a hill and threatened him" I looked at the coach and said " funny, you didn't have any issues with that same kid punching my kid in the back all day the last time we ran here. Tell your kid he should feel lucky that's all he got." I walked away, and to my luck, the third team coach spoke to the other coach, and apparently his kids all said that his kid started it, and was known to do this crap in other meets.
