People seem to have an idyllic impression of Vancouver, British Columbia, but there have been a number of violent crimes on runners in the last couple of years. I live in Vancouver, and occasionally run in Pacific Spirit Park, an amazing and beautiful system of trails surrounding the University of British Columbia. This area is surrounded by large, extremely affluent neighbourhoods to the east and south, and by ocean on the north and west. The trails are used by so many people during daylight hours that I tend to avoid them on week-ends after ~9AM because of the nuisance of off-leash dogs and their entitled owners. Recently I've noticed signs put up in various places warning about owls. A friend had one swoop down and scratch his head once. Owls are arseholes.
As nice a place as it is, there have been a series of violent crimes committed on runners in the area. The mayor of Vancouver's sister(1) was randomly murdered while running in Pacific Spirit park a few years ago, and there have been several violent sexual assaults on runners in the park much more recently(2).
Despite the history, I still see people running solo, wearing headphones on these trails.
