I have been following this website for years and I can name numerous athletes that have been singled out because of their issues. Very few times have the threads been wrong when claiming an athlete is going to have a short career because the way they are treating their bodies. You hear the defenders come on and talk about the family genetics, high metabolism, allergies, or whatever other excuse they can come up with to rationalize the athletes problems. The girl from the past weekend who is being talked about may very well turn out to be another sad situation where her body eventually gives out and the injuries and sicknesses take over.
I don't think deleting the threads about these athletes is the solution. It's very important that these horrible situations are called out directly and their support staff be held responsible. Many coaches aren't able to make rational decisions because they are balancing their careers (winning) with the athletes health. They want to hear that she has allergies, processes food faster than everybody else, that she is talking to a councilor, and that the trainers and school doctors clear her to compete. This removes them from being the responsible party from protecting the athlete from themselves. There is no difference between HS, college, or professional sports when it comes to getting an athlete help. It should be dealt with directly and the coaches should have to answer why they are allowing the athlete to compete. If they can go on record and say she is 100% healthy and by competing she is not posing any threat to her current or long term health than she should compete. I'd love to see this coach do an interview and be asked if he honestly feels that she is 100% healthy and capable of competing without endangering her long term health. Then the next question would be what would it take for her to be considered unhealthy? How could she get any worse without ending up in a treatment center to force her to gain weight? What happens when the girl loses 5 more lbs?
My stance: It needs to be talked about openly and with names and pictures. Do you know why the Ray Rice thing blew up after the video was released? Because you can't ignore it doesn't exist and images are real. Once the images are out there and you see them in person it's sad and something needs to be done. The threads are about the athlete and it's hurtful to see negative comments, but reality needs to be dealt with. Her friends, family, and coaches need people to disagree with them because their eyes are blurred with her being close to them.
