I would say Rupp running the trials should be a big wake up to Hall if it were the last trials, but Hall's 2:09 and inability to finish races should be a bigger one now

hall is not a factor - he is of the last cycle. No way he makes a team. Although he could lead the trials through some insane halfway mark, blowing up the field then dropping out.
Though it would be one of the most amazing comebacks ever if hall made a team.
Although I'd say Abdi has a better shot. frankly.
our marathon team is pretty weak...probably ritz, chelanga and some third man. They'll run the standard 2:11 and finish 10-15th at the OG, depending on how good they are at hot weather marathoning.
I'd love to see derrick getting in a healthy 6 months and doing it - he could make the team if he runs 2:13 or so. Which seems likely. But so injury prone.
If he medalled in Rio his value would certainly go up. I'm not saying he'd be a household name, but he'd be better known, for sure.

Would NYRR pay him something to show up? Sure. Would it be big enough money to justify risking injury + potentially screwing up his buildup to 2017 Track Worlds? I'm guessing the answer is no.

Maybe, but he medalled in London and that didn't seem to have any perceptible impact on his name recognition in the NYC-area running community. I guess winning might make him a bigger deal around here, but I'm not even sure that would do it.

under Mary's NYRR, they were clearly very interested in bringing top Americans to NYCM - I don't think they saw it as a profit driven decision - they saw it as their job as stewards of the NYCM.
Whether the NYRR has the same view under new leadership, I don't know.
But I don't think name recognition/dollars are the issue - NYCM wants to help american racers, and they want to keep themselves relevant vs. Boston and Chicago by getting the top americans.
that said, Chicago or even Boston seems more rupplike - NYC is highly non-rupp certified - potholes, rough pavement, obstacles, logistics...Boston's a little better on that, and obvi al sal has some history there.
He'd run best at chicago but I don't think they have as many dollars there.

Agree on both counts [and am guessing that the spending on American elites will marginally diminish under the new regime.]
Peter Ciaccia - the "Mr Outside" of NYRR's new two-headed leadership - seems more focused on building [repairing / restoring] NYRR's relationship with the local running community than he does on raising the profile of elite running in the US.
I didn't read the thread because this has been known for several years. If you do a search you can find Coach Salazar's interviews where this has always been the plan.
here. I helped you out

um, plans do change - that article is three years old.
Would you think that Jager would be a steepler in 2012?
um, Alberto has not coached Jager since middle school with an eye on (the extremely) long-term development.
and yes plans do change- as can be seen in the cancelled meet/ AR attempt resulting in Rupp running the NYC 1/2 Marathon (with an excellent showing).
For those that say NYC isn't Rupp-certified just remember a) Alberto has said that marathon training is an extension to 10,000 training and his debut was just a few weeks removed from cross season which would be similar to a Rio 10,000 effort mid-August followed up with an early November marathon b) appearance fees trump potholes

Throw his way, not through his way. C'mon, what could "through his way" mean, hm?
Farah went to the marathon early, ahead of Sal's schedule, and then apparently dropped it. Those were a couple changes.

Nothing ever changes. Nothing ever will. There's nothing in my youth or childhood. I must have done nothing good.
The Oregon Project just posted a new video on instagram that shows Galen Rupp doing some workout on grass and is captioned, "1st workout in the buildup to the Olympics. 10 Months 4 hours till the 10K goes off!

Thoughts?

Yes, one. Is that grass rupp certified?

Interesting. Didn't they just announce that he has low T levels? And now he is already training again?
Anyway, dude needs to eat a steak or two. If he wants to get BUFF, that's the only way to get there. And don't cut away the fat.
Thoughts....
Rupp will run the 10k at the next Olympics, if he qualifies.
Rupp will not run the 5k at the next Olympics, unless he qualifies for the 5k and fails to qualify in the 10k.
Rupp will run a fall US marathon, either Chicago or NY.
Rupp, at best, would be a mediocre marathoner.

He could be one of the best ever considering he get better as race distance increase, ans his best event is 10k. Based on his 26:44 for 10k I think he can run 59 for half and 2:05 for full. He will be the american holder at both. Expect double gold this year. Salazar will be more hands off this year and rely on one of the best marathon coaches in the world.

No, at long distances, in the great outdoors, Rupp has to deal with: pollen, wind, uneven surfaces, not being able to Salazar ever lap. He will never be one of the best ever.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
