Considering the way he ran at worlds in the 10k I'd say he could run 2:06 - best. Probably something like 2:07-08. He almost broke 60 in the NYC half in 2011, so he's capable of it. Salazar just have to do a good job!

Based on this year's performances? Nothing good or exceptional. 2:08 or slower.
So if he merely beats Meb's PR by less than a minute, that would be a failure?
If there really is going to be an announcement in a couple days, then lets wait until then to get details. This could be anything. As I recall Rupp initially declared himself for the 12' Olympic Trial Marathon as well. Or it could be he is running a marathon post Olympics. Or he really could be deciding to make the leap to Marathon as his primary event. I would be surprised if that is the case, but maybe.
The main problem with Rupp moving up to marathon is that he said he didn't like running marathons. His heart wasn't in to it. But maybe that has changed.

1. Meb is not a time trailer
2. Nowhere in my post did I say he running 2:08+ "would be a failure"
Alberto finally gets to coach a real marathoner!

Probably not a 205 or 206 guy - if you can run a 350 mile you probably aren't going to be a top 10 in the world marathoner. I know Dixon did it, but that is an exception.
I'd say 207 or 208 for the marathon. Which is darn good, but not American record material.
Geb ran 3:48.6 equivalent indoors, Bekele ran 3:49.3 equivalent and Kipchoge 3:50.2 equivalent. Goes without saying Rupp isn't on their level, but the one doesn't necessarily negate the other.
As for others with talk of his 60:30 half, that doesn't really say anything about his marathon potential. Lots of guys have ran fast halfs and never got the marathon right ... Tadese is exhibit number one in that regard.
Also it's hard to imagine this marathon next year business is true. Why would a guy who won a silver at the last olympics, had the fastest 10K in the world last year and was still 5th at World's this year even with an overall off/subpar season, do a marathon early in 2016?
Seems like it would very likely ruin his chances at the 10K in Rio.
Better up the EPO dose and androgel massage. Not to mention asthma meds, thyroid booster, and whatever gray or black supplements they can get their hands on.

Not everyone wants the easiest medal. Some people actually like to compete in the event with the best competition.

Ummm, only one quality 10k was run last year and it was set up specifically for Rupp to win. Not impressive.
Not every great 10K runner becomes a great marathoner. Just look at Simon Bairu. Sometimes things just don't pan out.
Haven't seen him do any(much?) longer stuff than 10K.
So I'm pretty new to LetsRun (just started this summer), so can someone explain the origin of Rupp-hating? is it Magness' and Goucher's doping accusations? is it the fact that he runs for Nike? its it his character? Or are people just sick of him kicking so much butt in the 10k for so long?
We so don't deserve to have an athlete like Rupp represent us. We are the worst fan base I've ever seen of any sport. But if Rupp runs the marathon and is gracious enough to do it representing the USA, I'm going to cheer like I've never cheered before!!!!
Jeez - pulling bekeke and geb isn't fair - you have to be a goat candidate to pull that off. And Dixon. Yeah it's possible but 1 in a 100. Or worse.
"You DUMB individual. His qualifying would be 'hello I am Galen Rupp', great YOUR in kid,"

I think he meant "great, URINE kid." since he gets tested so much.

It goes back years, nearly a decade. Probably due to the unprecedented situation he had in college. Went pro for a year, didn't perform up to his expectations, so backed out of that somehow and signed up to run at Oregon where he was on the team but still coached by professional coach Salazar. He had some ups an downs there, but finished his career fairly strong. Not graduating didn't win him many points among the cognoscenti here. The recent accusations of NOP only feed to what has been suspected by some all along.

You have another new registered nic, A Duck.
Rubb is not a "blue collar runner", according to LR. To most people here, to most important thing isn´t that America does whatever it takes (legally) to be competitive with the East Africans. It´s more important not to get any benefits compared to other, less talented runners. The best thing would be if Rupp had lived in a trailer, or at least worked part time at the Home Depot (like Brian Sell).

Why should that be important? The whole patriotic country-vs-country thing is a drag on the whole sport. I don't care if an American wins or not.
Besides, to beat east Africans legally, the US would have to
1) force millions of children to grow up on a subsistence diet to create a large talent pool of adults with willowy skeletons that naturally weigh 120 pounds
2) make them stand up and work all day instead of sitting around doing nothing most of the time
Never happen! And even if Dr Frankenzar could legally make an African-beater, it would still just be a triumph of science over nature, which is a bad thing. No way will I cheer for that. The people who stand up and work all day and grow up to have willowy skeletons and move efficiently should, by all rights, be the best distance runners. Nothing else would make sense.
As for Rupp's marathon prospects, he is too big to compete at marathons. Science might compensate for that on the track, but in longer distances it's too big a disadvantage to overcome.
There is no really reason to be honest. Let me tell you it's not just him, Ryan Hall has received nothing but disgusting vitriol from these boards for years now. It's just the low quality of human you get here.
