No matter what the pace, Rowbury should run just behind Simpson for 9/10ths of a mile. No way that wouldn't totally get in Simpson's head, probably cause her to make a mistake.
Thing is, what can Jenny do about it other than just trying to drop the hammer and run away from Rowbury? A slower early pace would likely favor Shannon at the end.

Seeing how Shannon currently has the better PB and the better kick, I'm not sure any strategy would favor jenny
-
i don't see anyway Simpson doesn't beat Shannon this time out.
She will be running on PURE HATE for an entire mile.
Shannon is likely less hungry at this point in the season and is running it for the NYRR money and perks. -
Provided she gets her nails perfect, Shannon will win.

Yup.
Shannon has the faster PR (almost a second) and faster 800. While I like Jenny a lot more (and she has a faster 3k) it seems like the tide is changing in their matchups.
But I hope i'm wrong! -
I think I missed the men's race. Any results?
-
Willis won easy enough to showboat a bit excessively for the last 50 meters or so
-
Meb just announced he is running NYC this fall.
At his age, that's a short turnaround to the trials. -
Aaaand it's jenny
-
1. Sara Hall, mom of four, 4:21
2. Heather Kampf, 4.22
3. Jenny Simpson 4:24 with a fist pump
4. Shannon Rowbury, 4:25 with a frowny face. -
When Shannon can't leach off Jenny in a race, she can't beat her. It's hell to not be towed in by Jenny for 99.9% of the race.

Yes, We Shall See Tomorrow, we saw. You said Shannon has the better PB and kick and didn't see how any strategy would favor Jenny. . .
Do you see how her strategy worked? Pretty cool huh.
Kinda cool how Jenny made sure Shannon didn't draft, she kind of hung back and took it with her killer kick.
She had the confidence to sit and kick knowing she is stronger and faster. -
Wait, huh? Sara Hall beat em both? Didn't she just run a half marathon?

That is certainly what it looked like at the finish: an emphatic fist-pump crossing the line, and absolutely zero effort towards shaking hand with Shannon afterwards. -

I think this makes things more interesting, especially with next year being an Olympic year. -

Pot calling the kettle black. Shannon has never tried to shake Jenny's hand. Let's not be hypocritical. They don't like each other, so they don't try to shake each others hand. At least they are not being phony. Get over it! -
This "rivalry" gets a lot of attention on these boards. Its too bad today's field didn't include Dibaba, Hassan, or Kipyegon so the rivalry could be in proper perspective.

Homer S. (S for Simpson?, hmmm...) wins the prediction contest as Jenny Simpson was able to focus her hate of Rowbury to gut it out at the end.
I'm really disappointed that Shannon didn't drift over behind Simpson in the first tenth there and stay just off her shoulder until the end. That would have been an absolute balls move. "I don't care what anyone says, I'm just here to get it your head, horse-lady." -

Well, the slower early pace did not "favor Shannon at the end". Better luck next time. And what was excessive about Nick being thrilled to have just won the 5th Ave. Mile? If he did a cartwheel & the Ickey Shuffle, I missed it.
