The question should be why is American xc run on golf courses. It's supposed to be cross country in all weathers not cross a smooth billiard table golf course in summer

we turned our fields into parking lots. For a lot of schools, the only real xc would be way out in the country on someone's farm.

The funny truth of this is that if they simply mowed a 3' wide path around the entire perimeter of the golf course for runners to use at their own risk daily I would probably join the club at its full fee cost.
Tiger woods chooses the courses he joins partly on whether he will be allowed to run on it in the morning.
As long as you don't run on the tees, greens or area around the greens, the damage is very minimal. If the course is designed by a runner/ golfer, this is fairly easy to do. It is true that with a bit of rain, some courses can be mud baths: university of western ontario has an invite on The Thames Valley golf course in London Ontario that was a mud bowl in 1995 for the national champs.

Thames Valley is one of the courses I was referencing in how muddy it could be. Before saying "it's not XC", that and Hamilton's Chedoke are very hilly. (and not to mention, lots of undulations as well on both courses). I don't know about Thames Valley, but Chedoke is a public course and as long as you are after hours and/or off season, you should have no issue running on it.
Adding to your advice, I would add "stay to the outside of the fairways" as the last thing Golfers want to see is their fairways destroyed. Finally, if the course looks like a premium one, treat the fairways like the greens - stay off it at all costs.

Not all American XC. My HS course was partly on trails, and included a scramble up an 80 foot high near cliff. There was a path of sorts, but you had to grab trees and bushes to get up it.
I want to golf on XC courses.
Obvious answer is $$$$$. Golf courses all over the country are closing at alarming rates due to demographic changes, and XC is a small opportunity to raise some revenue. Win win situation as they are IDEAL training grounds, if not courses for good racing. Golf is a dying sport of the 20 something set, and HS and college XC is stable and probably slightly growing in participation. Great opportunity for both sides.
I like to travel the world and play golf in different parts of the world. I played golf on the glaciers of Antarctica. This extreme vacation requires proper equipment that I buy in online stores https://golferexpert.com/best-cold-weather-golf-ball/ . I like to try new modifications and new equipment.
