The closest thing to an answer that the OP was looking for is Samuel Wanjiru. R.I.P.
What about that preposterous 10k time that Wanjiru ran as an 18 year old? Isn't that some kind of junior record?

...except for the actual answers of Rudolf Harbig and Flojo.
I did read the thread, you should too. The OP asked for MODERN ERA performers. That implies 1980's-ish and beyond. So Rudolf Harbig is out. As for FloJo, to be honest, I thought the OP was interested in male performers, only.
Not quite but... When Ivo Van Damme passed at the age of 22 in 1976, his 800 best was 1:43:86. Earlier that year the WR had been taken down to 1:43:50 by Alberto Jauntorena. His 3:36:26 1500 was a good 4 seconds off Filbert Bayi's existing WR at that time. Quite a talent.

Thompson Magawana has the 50K world record at 2:43:38 (5:16/mi). Although, I think this is unofficial, because it was set en route to his victory at the Two Oceans Marathon. In any case, he died in 1995, and no one has run faster than this for 50K.
Lennox Miller of Jamaica was part of a USC quartet that set the last recognized 4 x 110y WR of 38.6. Mr Miller left us in 2004. Of note, his daughter Inger, was part of the Gold Medal US 4x100 team in Atlanta. Of lesser note, OJ Simpson was also on that So Cal relay team.
Bruce Fordyce will probably take the 50 mile world record to the grave.
He ran 4:50:xx in the early 80's. I think only a few people have run a sub-5 hour 50 miler since then.

It was set in Chicago and guys like Zach Bitter went and gave it their best a few years back and did 5:12 and change. It's a safe record.
I think most of those WRs from the 80s by South Africans will stand.

Nike's marketing team should get a HUGE raise for making people think Pre had a bunch of WRs. It's astonishing how overrated he is. Imagine if he lived today how the LRers would utterly destroy him. He'd get the same treatment as Centro. An arrogant piece of stool who can't win anything important except a few local track races. But he will tell you how great he is that's for sure.
Dumbest comment of 2015
I’d bet my life that at least one of Alan Webb’s records will outlive him. They’ve been attempted time and time again, and still stand. It would take a very special runner to bust his 3:53 or his 3:46.

Dang nope...
Don Ritchie's WR over 100k from 1978 was not broken before he passed away. That was 40 years later.
Yuri Sedykh will die of old age with his record from 1986.
Secretariat and Spectacular Bid both still hold records what are now between 40 and 46 years old.
Secretariat died at 19 and The Bid at 27.

The Modern Era began in 1500.

Pretty sure Wilt Chamberlain has the record for most points in a basketball game.
