However, if t recruit those fast twitch doing long runs you make them for fatigue resistant. You need to do the speed work (working above lactate threshold) to recruit them and maintain their ability to produce force rapidly as needed in sprint.

By contrast the Africans have been prominent every year since Keino .
Let's also not lose sight of the fact that only Snell actually ran what would be considered really fast today.
Lydiard was not just a great coach; he was great at pissing people off.
Indeed. Anyone ever notice that Lydiard is NOT in OBE? Ever wonder why?

Actually, he did have an OBE, plus being a member of the Order of New Zealand, the country's highest honour.
I'm not saying he wasn't an abrasive personality though. His falling out with Snell is but one example of that.
The basis of Lydiard's method is spending a lot of time training aerobically before moving on to the more intensive hill reps and track work. It is a bit more complex than this but that is it's essence.
The vast majority of top level runners still adhere to this but it is now widely recognised that there are more ways of training aerobically than the sustained long distance runs favoured by Lydiard. eg, an 800m runner doing a session of 6-8x1000 round an undulating grass circuit with no more than 60 seconds recovery is training almost entirely aerobically - but Lydiard would have called this an interval session and would not have had his athletes do it in the build up phase. (Steve Ovett did very similar sessions to this almost weekly during his winter training)
No one would without PEDs.
P.S. You do know that Peter Coe isn't coaching anymore?
