Look here:
http://www.iaaf.org/about-iaaf/documents/rules-regulations#rulesThen download the first document - IAAF Competition Rules 2014-2015 - and Ctrl+F for the word zigzag. I am not clear what is "the predetermined period" and hence how to figure out or find "the original performance lists," and whether there were any special rules for these World Championships so that Note (ii), just above where zigzag distribution is discussed, would apply. But most if not all of the relevant information is on page 169 of the document in the link and this should give you some idea.

Willis looked very good in the first round. He ran that 5k in the heat and got out kicked by ben true, who btw seems to be out kicking a lot of quality people of recent. He hasn't finished worse than second all year. Also willis just pr this year so I wouldn't count him out,

No way. WHo pushes the pace? Willis? Nobody else has any motivation, they'll just hope for the best with their kick. Willis was recently outkicked in a 5k wasnt he? So he might want an honest race I guess.
1st heat slow, 2nd fast.
very strong finish from willis. 200m to go, i thought, he is out. but then -wow.
Results?
Video of the races would be even better...
All 3 Americans advance

So, heat 2 is going to be tactical apparently (only 5 qualifiers), and heat 1 the fast heat, with 7 qualifiers.
Been wrong again.
Yeah, i saw that, he got boxed in behind two guys who were losing contact with the lead pack going into that last 200m. The camera didn't pick him up again until the final 80m, where he ended up accelerating to a second place finish. This is going to be one final where I have no idea who's going to medal, except kiprop. Too many top quality finisher that are in superb shape.
