On another - nameless board - people are talking up how wonderful the Millrose HS mile is. I'm sure it was good years ago, but lately none of the good kids have ever run there. Is it crap? Who are going to be the stars this year?

I don't know whose running but it usually goes around 4:19.
Not quite as bad as that mens' open 3000 last year. The saddest day in Millrose Games history.

If you think Chris Lukezic was chopped liver last year, then I guess the field is not impressive. The problem is--the top guys want a TOP TIME, and the Millrose track is not going to give it to them. The kids don't know how to run those steep embankments, so the races end up being tactical. It is SLOW, and in the past, Millrose meant great exposure for these kids. Thats not much of a factor today, although it is cool to run in the Garden. There is no longer national TV coverage, and the internet covers a meet at the Armory to a larger degree than Millrose. Lot of top kids will skip it in favor of a fast track. The luster is over, although you still get great talents out there today--ie Dalpiaz. If you live near NY, go.
All of the information on this thread so far is either completely erroneous or misleading. The boys mile at Millrose has not been won in as slow as the 4:19 figure quoted here since 1988...when a guy named Bob Kennedy won it.
The so-called men's open 3000 results from last year are in fact from an event for metropolitan area competitors. There was no "open" 3000 at Millrose last year, but it is being restored for 2003, and you can expect to see something in the 7:30s (like Paul Koech used to run year after year) or at least the 7:40s.
The Millrose high school mile might best be judged by the quality of the people who have won it - Kennedy, Seneca Lassiter, Michael Stember, Andy Powell, and Jon Riley on the boys' side
Over the past several years Millrose milers have posted nation-leading times, as evident with last year's performance on the girls' side. And Millrose does get the top-notch athletes- Flanagan (won NCAA xc this year), Bei, and Donahue have all run there over the past few years. Last year the girls had to break 5 minutes in the mile just to be considered for a spot in the Millrose mile. So yes, it is great.
How is LustLost mistaken in his comments? Guy seems right on. He makes some very good points, and as to the other comment about "nation leading times" (in 2002), to which do you refer? My friend Melissa Donais won the Mile last year in very dominating fashion, but she was hardly the nations leader last year. Maybe the qualification is very competitive, but that Garden track is SLOW SLOW SLOW.
Come on now, no one is going to run 7:30s for 3K at Millrose this year, Open or otherwise. I GUARANTEE it won't happen.
