Official 2015 Worlds Men's 10,000 Discussion Thread

1) Tergat only ran 56 secs on that last lap in Sydney - Geb was injured and had missed a load of training.

2) Tergat never ran as bravely in a major champs final as Kamworor did today. His best effort was Atlanta but even then he left it to the last 3k.

3) Yes, he ran loads of fast times but compared to Mo, he benefitted from a time when there were loads of 10,000s on the track every summer and plenty of quality pacemakers. This was also the time when there was massive EPO usage. I find it hilarious that so many people here are convinced Mo is a doper and appear utterly ignorant of when the major doping was taking place.

Mo is nowhere near Geb or Bekele. I doubt he'll ever run a 26:2x (26:35 is probably his limit) but in a champs race he'd certainly have beaten the likes of Tergat, Sihine, Kipchoge.

Does anyone know the weather conditions for this race? It would be interesting to see if Rupp is in AR shape in the 10k.

Farah ran in the back this time, but if u remember in Eugene Kamworor sat back when Farah and Tanui were pushing the pace.

This time it 3 vs 2. Tanui was sitting back while Bidan and Kamworor were pushing the pace.

Unless u have no clues about racing tactics.

If Farah pushed the pace the chances were Rupp could have been dropped putting Farah at a disadvantage.

He was literally checking on Rupp occasionally to make sure he was on board.

While he ran a monopoly on world cross country (5 consecutive titles) and had 2 consecutive world half marathon titles, he won zero Olympic and World Championship titles.

Tergat won 5 world cross country titles - Farah has zero - whoops.

Tergat ran 26:27.

Farah would have had to run his PR with a 35 second last lap.

Farah has run 26:46 -- the fourth fastest time this decade. And he ran 26:50 earlier this year.

Thank you for supporting my argument. 26:46 is not an attempt to run a fast time or a world record. It's a good time but it's 30 seconds behind the record.

1) Tergat's final 200 of that last lap was run in 26.3 seconds. They also ran preliminary rounds in the 10000m in those days.

2) Kamworor did not run bravely today. He ran braver than Mo (not hard to do) but it wasn't anything noteworthy. The first 2 laps were around 70 seconds. With a mile to go, they were still running 65 second laps. Once again, they gave the race to Farah.

3) Farah is the highest profile distance athlete on the planet. His group has and could have organized as many 10ks as they they wanted just for him. They've done it for Rupp. They've done it for even someone as irrelevant as Hasay. One time at Pre a few years ago, Farah dropped out of the 10000m when he heard Bekele requested a fast pace/rabbit.

You have to be kidding. Farah might have beaten them or not, but it is far from "certainly". You're talking about Paul Tergat. Sihine (only beaten by Bekele practically). Kipchoge has beat both El G and Bekele in a championship race.

Regardless the rest of the discussion, Kipchoge would clearly have put Mo to a test .. he beat both those 2 when they were in great form, and was close again in '04.

Solinsky at his best would also have been competitive in any world final, assuming heat wouldn't have affected him worse than Rupp, and Solinsky did close his 26:59 in 1:56, in addition to several times running faster at 5000m than Rupp ever did, 12:55, 12:55, and 12:56, I think.

Is Farah the greatest tactician of all time? He is much more astute than Geb and Ken.

Geb and Ken could dominate their opponents with their superior ability but Mo dominates with his ability and tactics, almost bullying and taunting his rivals.

Rupp closed a 26:44 in 1:58 which I would consider superior to a 26:59 closed in 1:58. Combining that with the fact that Rupp has run 3:50 and Solinsky has not, it seems unlikely that Solinsky would have been competitive vs Rupp today, much less the kenyans and Mo.

Today's race was won in 27:01 and run ran like 27:08, it's hard to imagine Solinsky running within 10 seconds of his PR in a fartlek style race in Beijing's heat and shitty air quality.

On that note, I wouldn't be surprised if Rupp is in 10k PR shape now with his run today (as well as the Kenyans+Mo).

I don't think the fact that Solinsky's 5k PR is 4 seconds faster than Rupp's matters a whole lot.

Not a bad point. I wasn't thinking about Solinsky when I wrote that. It's certainly possible he would be competitive too. I would argue, however, that his one big 10k had a flawless setup (much like Rupp's sub 27's) with absolutely no pressure on him at the time (as I recall it was completely unexpected). He also only had that one big year (maybe 18 months?) Rupp has performed well now at 4 straight global championships over 5 years so it's easier to make that assumption about him. I agree with you that Solinsky was a better 5k runner.

Sihine, Tadesse and Farah is a good debate but this part about no one running the event just does not hold. Kipchoge was awesome in the 5000 and 3000 and is about as good as Kimetto and Kipsang in the Marathon. He has more speed than Mutai, Kimetto or Kipsang. Kipchoge did try the 10000. It just did not go that well. Also, some good 5000 runners have tried and not done well at Worlds (Edris, Gebremeskel). Others did well - Jeilan is a world XC junior champ and he beat Farah in 2011. Image Merga ran a lot of great 5000s and won World XC (beating Mutai). Tariku Bekele was a world indoor champ with a good 5000 PR and he took Bronze. There are others too. Moses Mosop did well at 10000 but was not 'other-worldly' - Mosop was right behind MUtai at Boston In the 2:03 race. GG won WxC and the NyC marathon. He did not medal at 10000. These guys may not be as good as KB, HG and PT but I am not convinced anyone is as talented as they were for 10000. I don't see why people create a fiction at some 26:20 runners are out there. They do not exist right now. Maybe that young Ethiopian will do it one day.It is simple - Farah is the best now and Rupp is top 5 or 6 with a shot at medaling on the right day.

Anyone putting Farah higher on that list is probably a millennial or senile, therefore not remembering that the 10,000 used to actually feature the "world's best long distance" runners.

We are now in the weakest period the event has ever seen. Just look at the yearly world-bests at the runners picking up medals. (RUPP?!)

The fact that Mutai, Kiprop, Kipchoge, Kimetto etc etc etc never bothered to legitimately attempt the distance says it all.
