I agree that what a 10,000 guy can do in the mile isn't really relevant. I mean has Geoffrey Kamworor ever run a mile? However, I would be concerned that he lost to Mead.
The main problem is that he only closed in a 58 after coming through 3/4 mile in 3:02.
3:02 for a 3/4 mile should feel like a joke for someone who has run 26:44 with a 1:58 last 800, and 4:01 for a 1600 in a 5x1600 after an 8:07 2 mile.
If he does well at worlds I'll be very perplexed.

Sure it does. A 58 last lap isn't scaring anyone in the 10k.
Closing in a mile and closing in a 10k aren't the same. This is from an admitted Rupp disliker.

Where did I say they were the same? Where did I ask if you like or disliked Rupp?

Yes, you're right. I now see your point. This is an incredible race for Rupp. It looks like he's in crazy good shape.
A 58 second closer in a mile, after a 3:02 split is no small feat for Rupp or any other top class 10,000m. I mean, he mowed down Riva, the Canadian 1500m champion.
For the first time, I think that I have to say that Rupp may now be the favourite for the WC.

It may be a jv meet at a jv track but he got beat by 2 seconds by guys he should be killing. Hassan Meade beat him.
2 seconds is a lot in an eternity in a mile.
When has Rupp ever destroyed a field at a Mile (outdoor I mean, a real mile not the juiced up BU track which everyone knows yields phony times - and that happened all of once)? Why would you expect him to destroy/kill milers? He's slow.
Silver/bronze in the 10k, 7th in the 5k. Business as usual.
This is letsrun. Those of us who've barely broken 4:20 don't have a lot of respect for guys who can't even break 3:55.

I am a Rupp fan, and I am not concerned. I did not expect him to show up in his first race in over a month and drop a sub-3:55 FTW. The Mile is not his event. If he was entered in the 1500m at the WC, I would be worried, but he is looking at a 10,000/5000m double.
Remember, Rupp is not Farah. Rupp has mediocre races in his build-ups. Always has. Why doesn't anyone mention that he beat Torrence? Because Torrence is irrelevant?
NIck Symmonds placed dead last in the 400m. Are Symmonds's fans sticking a fork in him? The 400m is half the distance of the 800m, while the Mile is 1/3 of the 5000m and 1/6th the 10,000m. I would be worried if I was fan of Nick Symmonds.
Symmonds' 400m PR is 47.45; with that he still would have finished DFL.

Best response ever.
roger banister era s#@t
He probably just finished off a 125 mile week with some killer workouts. He's in Portland, so that may have been his 5th or 6th mile rep under 4:15. Relax...he'll be ready.

Fanboy excuses are hilarious. Only Rupp is allowed to have "off" days.
Bad result. Meaningless race for him. Worlds is two weeks out. That's what counts.
Words on the street is that he had a 6*1000m session on Thursday (average 2:30 with 60 secs float) and 15*400m Tuesday(57 with 30 sec flow) prior to the race.
Meaningless? Why did Rupp kick in an attempt to win? Your an idiot Monte...

Folks we are finally seeing what a clean and honest galen is capable of running.
Or he said F a kick and is just in so good of shape he can ran back to back 4:01 miles or faster. Maybe a fast race is expected so he's been training for a 26:30's race where a 52 second last lap won't be needed, more like a 56-58. It's a bad race. It happens. Rupp will still get a medal. Don't believe me just watch.
I hard he did 12x1k at 235 then 6x400 in 57 the night before(Friday). Then he took off in a car is high I followed. Him and Levin's did workout after the race at a nearby track. 4x1600 in 422 413 409 403 for rupp with Levin's a few meters back then last 2 reps
As far as I am concerned, Rupp and Salazar have everyting under control. Remember that at this time before a championship they have their peak mileage and the most rigorous training of the year. Just go to Runnerspace.com and search for Alberto Salazar, and you will find the explanations in a Q & A round.
Rupp is likely going to struggle to break 29:00 at WCs ... or will DNF.
He and AlSal are under the microscope. It appears that Rupp is mortal when he is outside of the grey zone.
Cheers.
