The IAAF have tried to implement a 4 year ban before, but it can't be enforced in Europe as it contravenes EU human rights; to have the right to make a living from your job.
I don't think people on here appreciate the time, money and effort involved in every individual case just to enforce a 2 year ban. The IAAF have spent many years being taken to court and losing appeals from convicted athletes to have them banned for 4 years.
So I don't think it would be legal to ban an athlete for life on first conviction. That is t the IAAF's fault, but rather the EU Commision.
It also doesn't help when individual national federations go against IAAF sanctions and let their star sprinter come back a year early for helping them with their enquiries.
While I think there is doping involved at elite level and suspect the IAAF of not closely analysing and following up those hundreds of dodgy levels, I do t think that the current infrastructure is in place to have even attempted to do so.
I think Coe's attack on the scientists and journalists is mistaken, I do think he is anti doping and his wish to have a rigorous and independent body to carry out testing is the best and only way forward. It would be independent of the IAAF and national federations, and every country's athletes would be tested equally as often.
It makes me laugh some of the criticism thrown Coe's way. It seems obvious to me that he can only defend his federation, the one he is part of and attempting to take control of. He is probably very aware of some corruption (which is found in all massive corporations) and doubtless has his own ideas on how to tackle them. But to basically one out and call your predecessor corrupt and all the people involved in voting for you would really be shooting yourself in the foot. Some on here have accused him of not being too bright. On the contrary, he is a shrewd politician and knows that the long term end game is more important than getting the plaudits from LetsRun posters.
I have no doubt there would be great changes for the better if Coe is elected. His passion for the sport is genuine. He knows that the doping issue is killing the sport and that constant exposés are not going to help on their own. An independent agency carrying out random and out of season testing of all athletes equally is the best way forward and what he has been advocating for several years now. But he won't be able to do this if he comes out and supports the journalists and scientists at this stage.
