That's a naive statement to make without having been there ^^. There's clearly a line with that kind of behavior and it very much sounds like several people crossed it.
The coach didn't lose his job. He resigned, voluntarily. Huge difference. That should wake up the athletes on the team, and I would think is the best thing for a culture change. When you see your immaturity lead to a coach making a decision like that, it better be time to change.
The university wouldn't have launched the investigation if the video had not been inappropriate.
Also, it wasn't the female on the team that brought up the sexual misconduct. It was a member of the men's team.
Georgetown coach Pat Henner resigns (but gets glowing recommendation from AD) - 7 xc meets are cancelled

That is a good point; in hindsight, I have more questions than answers.
It says the investigation to racial bias found nothing wrong. Do you think the girl who cried wolf should be punished?
Also, how voluntary do you think the resignation was? -
acela takes 47 minutes from Baltimore Penn Station to Washington Union Station. Great hills and trails to train on anywhere between Baltimore, MD and D.C.
-
I think by crying wolf on the racism issue she already punished herself.
She can be looked at as a person who just made excuses for her poor performance. She clearly had a motive for saying the things she said. I think that's part of why the second investigation was much different. The member of the men's team didn't make a big deal of himself. He didn't attach his name to a blog. He didn't make excuses for his performance or blame it on the misconduct. Her name was released and is attached to that blog so that can hurt her reputation.
It's difficult to say how voluntary the resignation was. But the statement speaks really highly of the coach and certainly suggests it was completely his decision. I think he could have stayed if he wanted but missing 7 weeks of competition really hurts. I would imagine he'll be able to land on his feet elsewhere. -
I'm not clear if the 7 meets are CC or T&F?
If it's CC that's the season isn't it? Why not just say that. What are they going to do skipp the BE and just go to the regional? -
I have been following this story since it started and have a few observations.
1. As a former collegiate runner, the "scavenger hunt" and "awards" seem to be grossly inappropriate - so inappropriate that it seems laughable that anyone would believe they were expected to do them. It looks like a big joke to me. Full of inside jokes and "tasks" meant more to be laughed at than taken seriously. I think this kind of behavior is pretty normal amongst distance runners, but should never have been circulated.
2. After analyzing everything the Nate kid was pushing out to the media, one thing wasn't clear. If the scavenger hunt was for the 2013-2014 year (I'm guessing distributes sometime at beginning of year?) why did he wait to show it the administration until Spring of 2015. It seems as if he was using it in conjunction with the racial investigation to throw greater attack at the coaching staff. It seems as if he was more interested in getting the coaches fired/dismantling the program than he was changing the "culture"of the team. This became really clear after watching a WUSA interview with a sprinter (I think Washington?) who said that minorities were not happy because of coaching staff and new coaches were needed. It seems like a group was working together to get the coaches fired at all cost.
It's really sad to see them succeed and an innocent man (forced?) to resign. It seemed like the issue really only blew up because how sensitive the racial stuff seemed even though it wasn't true. Really a shame. -

Just a bunch of white privileged middle to upper class kids trying to make their shallow boring lives more interesting.
If you think any of them are going to have remorse after this then you don't know privileged white kids. .
WHat does race and income have to do with anything? Last time I checked most males 18-22 are pretty crazy. In the ghetto, people make their shallow boring lives more interesting by joinging a gang and dealing drugs. -
Someone caught this pic of a couple Gtown athletes after they heard Henner resigned. They weren't happy.

have you ever, you know, seen a GU runner or other student athlete? (see: how often does mom let you out of the basement?). most of them stick to the cutoff shorts and old beat up shoes look, for better or for worse.

These emails are funny. I like these guys.
-
I know a few of these so called white, privileged distance guys on the team. They are honorable, extremely hard working young men. None of them are rich.
Just think what it takes to make it at G'town distance. You have to devote years of your life running 80 - 100 mpw while living a monk-like existence. Daddy can't buy that. You have to literally earn it.
When you think about it, it makes no sense to even try. They are literally sacrificing their time and energy just to see what they can accomplish with no monetary gain whatsoever. Privileged? I don't think so.
One of them suffered extremely difficult injuries (much worse than the accuser) and is just now working his way back to elite status. Is he blaming the coaches for his injuries? No. He's taking responsibility for his results. As far as I'm concerned, no matter his 8K or 10K times, he's already won at the game called life.
I would put any of these young men up against the two accusers with respect to integrity and hard work any day.
It truly sickens me what we've become as a society when some lazy _ss person can use race as an excuse and get an innocent man fired. Congratulations. Good luck in life. You'll need it. -
The consequences had nothing to do with race
They had everything to do with the sexual actions and immaturity on the team
Get your facts straight -

+1.
A lot of people on here are having a hard time condoning the actions of the team members. Lots of 'boys will be boys' comments and lots of pointing fingers at the girl when that has nothing to do with why they behaved inappropriately and why the coach resigned / was fired. Continue to ignore trivialize the boys' behavior if you think that is helpful. -
'condemning" not condoning.
-
Is what the team did right? No. If you think that 18-22 year old guys at any school don't act like this, you are crazy. It is also something that a coach would never know about.

Here we go again - the boys will be boys card, even when the boys are old enough to go overseas and fight for their country or to vote in elections. At what age do you think it is reasonable to expect men to not condone sexually degrading acts as 'fun and games'? After all, these are supposedly some of the nation's best and brightest, right? Supposedly they have worked so hard to get to that point and they work so hard to make the most of the college careers - on the track and in the classroom. Can they be expected to show some of this intelligence and discipline that got them so far when it comes to moderating their personal behavior, or is that asking too much of them? Maybe if they are not capable of acting like adults, they shouldn't be on scholarship at a 'so-called' elite program. Maybe the new coach will be someone who actually has control over this athlete's, and they will become a regular top 10 finisher in XC as they should be with all of the talent they get on the men's side. More training and less playing around with each other's manhoods would be a good start. -

Clearly never ran in high school or in college. Probably a woman. -

Clearly do not believe in privileged, young students accepting personal responsibility for their actions. They should play by their own rules I guess you believe, and why not? That's the way the society is set up for them, right? If things get out of control mommy and daddy (or their lawyers) will clean up the mess. Next stop - corporate America, where they will continue with their 'boys will boys' behavior. -

Why do you hate non blacks so much?
Here is privilege: The privilege of black males to launch unprovoked attack on a female and mutilate her.

So yes, college boys should be able to their little joke emails and whatever antics they get up to (isn't perversion "normal" and encouraged now? Why is it only punished when it is useful as tool to punish whites for being white when the "racist" card didn't work?).
What matters is that Black Privilege is challenged and checked.
Currently it is either covered up or encouraged by the racist caste system. -
Are you insane? Most likely non of these guys come from high powered families, they're just stupid college kids. This stuff happens in every locker room across the country and 99% of the time is benign and there is no ill intent behind it. Get of your pseudo-liberal high horse and realize people can act like jackasses sometimes and and still be good people.
