amazing. what the hell is wrong with you?

sense of humor defect i guess is what's wrong with me.
I was kidding. Just found it funny to realize that someone guesstimated as only a year older than me was referenced as "an old guy"
best wishes,
Dave

Funny. Your question should be directed back at you. Dave's not the one with the humour deficit.
I'm 54 and I coach women in their 20s. Sometimes I run with them. I guess I'm a stud.
What others have said -- it is mostly about pace. Also variety. Guys in their 50s spend plenty of time with other people their own ages at home, work and running. Running can get monotonous. Why not mix things up and run with some nice looking, similar paced younger women occasionally? It's inspirational, and probably also leads to better fitness like any good running motivator does.
As for the shaved chest, maybe he's a triathlete. Or it could be some other practical reason like wanting to use sunscreen without it glopping all over his chest hair. Or maybe even this guy's wife likes it that way.
I'm the guy you saw. I don't think I didn't notice my daughters as you jogged by at 8:30 pace. And yes, I banged them both afterward.
Even though the OP is most likely a troll, for what it's worth the guy above my post nailed it with many possibilities.
I'm 52. I am coming back from an injury this past winter. I ran a 17+ 5k last fall. I am married, 24 years. I shave my chest because I like it that way (just the last 5 years or so). I have done 3 biathlons, swim 1k run 5k, but that's not my reason for shaving my chest. Also I run with many different runners from gender to ability.
Also, I am fit, keep my hair short, and am never looked at as someone in their 50's, but... "I am" and you "may" get there too. Several of my friends didn't make it due to cancer, accidents, heart, etc...
If you think 55 is old, you have no clue and good luck with the aging process.

moderators, can we change the subject line allusion to "old guy" to something like "gentleman in his early middle years"? Thank you.
Dave (age 54)
I like this suggestion. Can we add "distinguished" to that?
Sounds like you were graced by the presence of Run Master himself, Ray Stanfield.

In the last two races I have run, a spectator has yelled "good job old guy" at me as I passed. I'm hoping it was because I was running beside much younger people!
I was in a race last month and 6 young women started pulling away from me about a half mile in. There are usually one or two, but 6 was a surprise. A little investigation showed it was an elite racing group from the area.
A good 55 year old would be running times that would be very close to good 25 year old women.
I am approaching the M55 age bracket and still run in Wave 1 for the Boston Marathon. I don't care if I am running with two younger women, younger guys or triathletes. Controlled cadence is very important in any endurance training and without sounding biased, women are better at this. My objective is to remain in the Wave 1 during the M55-59 years.

Why? I can't help it as I am cursed with a really big pole.
Was it this guy you saw OP?

Curious why you think this...
Most of the men I run with run somewhat even splits in their races, while the women either run super conservative and finish with a vastly disproportionate kick relative to their race pace, or they go like bats out of hell then fall off. That, of course, is anecdotal, so I don't take those as trends. Has your experience been different?
For the most part, I agree with Not Fast. Women are better at it, at least I've found the same thing in most all of my races. They run even to negative and don't go out too fast at the start. Your experiences may differ;)

I'm 43 and my wife (and therefore all her friends we run with) are mid 20's and are needless to say built like runners.... maybe he was married to one of them... you jealous?
The guy sounds like a baller. You should hang out with him and learn how to score.
I really hope this guy was gay and he was just friends with the girls.

This is amazingly accurate. Like somebody else said, most posters should read this quote and look in the mirror.
OP, I like how you jump to two extremes, one of which you think must be applicable: (1) that the gentleman is engaged in sexual relations with the two younger ladies, or (2) that the two younger ladies have "friendzoned" the older gentleman. Think about why your brain jumps only to these two assumptions and get back to us.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
