I think you need to give some credit to Columbia frosh Sam Ritz - I'm sure he knew going into this race that he would need to stick to Penn as close as they could in order to help the team in the title race. Had he finished 3 seconds slower, Penn would have won the title. Columbia and Penn both had similar spreads - 55.8 for Penn to 57.4 for Columbia.
But boy, what an exciting race to watch, even if it was through Periscope.
For a frosh to be top 30 is good but several people told me it looked like Ritz was almost jogging it in during the last 30 meters. It didn't appear that he was clawing and fighting for every place. Yes he closed the door on the win but he also nearly cost them. I imagine a stud like that was hoping to be top frosh and top 15. But you don't pack it in. You dig deep.
Now maybe he was totally shot and just totally cratering. I always thought it was bad to make value judgements based on how runners look in a race. Some look beatufiul when tired, others not so much. It's could be that he's a miler who maybe went out hard and was dead at cemetary but at 9.1 k he was in 17th place. At the finish he was 28th.
At the top of cemetery, I congratulated Dan Ireland on the win. I got to the finish and thought, "Oh my god what happened."
Columbia was basically in total control the entire race. From the time they came back over the bridge (halfway) to the 7500, it was over. Suddenly, it was almost an epic collapse. But in the end, what matters it he Lions and Ritz got the job done.
Congrats Columbia.
