Have any two brothers or sisters (or a brother and a sister) ever held world records at two outdoor T&F events before? Hard to imagine it's never happened before Genzebe and Tirunesh, 1500/5000. What obvious case(s) am I overlooking?

I don't know how she got to this level far superior to any other runner today and ahead even of the doped Chinese and Eastern Europeans, but it is true that she is, to my knowledge, the first of the great Ethiopian 5000m runners to really tackle the 1500m seriously. Meseret Defar and Tirunesh Dibaba not only ran faster at 5000m than Genzebe has so far (she'll smash that record in the right conditions now), but had the ability to close a 5000m in sub 59. That right there indicated that they would be able to handle the 1500m runners over the last 15 years, who frequently could not even close a low 4 in sub 60. Dibaba and Defar would surely have run low to mid 3:50s as well but they didn't have the desire or courage to go after it.
I don't know if she's clean and for the enjoyment of that moment it didn't matter to me. That was amazing to watch.
In her potential defense - she is perhaps the most talented member of the most talented running family in history on the women's side. Considering we have been waiting for a while now for the female East Africans to rise to the level of performance of their male counterparts gives credence to the fact that we could see huge changes in records such as this and what they've done thus far in the 5k.
I think with a bit more time we will see Paula's marathon be much less of an outlier as the training on the women's side continues to become more aggressive with a larger and larger pool of talented women attacking all distance events.
So if I were to assume she is one of the most talented women then her times of 14:15 and 3:50 do not seem unreasonable. But I don't know.
Great runner to watch! Good seeing her run fast, too!
I just find it really intersting that all the athletes under coach jama aden are getting pbs, sbs, and other records.
Either he is a really good coach or.....
At least the chinese wr went down.

That statement says much more about you than it does about the NOP. The level of childish hatred within the LRC message boards is both amusing and tragic at the same time.

That was an amazing race. So happy for her. Doping speculators... Why even follow this sport???
I agree. You can't have any type of success in this sport anymore without someone accusing you of doping.
It's one thing to make that type of comment to an athlete coming back from a doping ban, but to say such negative things to a lady that has had no failed tests? That's just jumping to conclusions attempting to diminish somebody else's success.

Your screen name speaks volumes. Who do you even bother watching the sport if everyone is guilty-until-proven-innocent?

actually had to laugh here - good one!
Really surreal to watch this.
Still can't comprehend how anyone could find this legitimate. This was shades of Ben Johnson, FloJo, Johnson, Ramzi, Centro...
Those cheering for the removal of the Chinese records are idiots. A doped-up 3:50 replacing another doped-up 3:50 is not a victory. Fenton made himself look like an ass.
I do think it's possible that Jenny B's 3:56 is a clean world record. Unfortunately there's no recognition for this.
simpson ran 3:57. pretty effing good. basically her PB

Too fast -> doping. Nice logic there. Time to quit this sport.
Who is Jenny B? I assume it's some american who you think is the best. Obviously an american should hold the WR instead of an african.

The other guy! wrote:Title says it all. Dibaba proves that you can run 3:50 clean.
What does that say about the Chinese World Records?
Maybe the track wasn't short after all.
Maybe they were clean.
Dibaba clean? There is no reason to believe that people who train most of the year in areas that allow them to avoid spot checks and out of season tests are clean. These people build themselves up in the off-season with drugs and training and reap the benefits during the season. Until they're tested year round like most people, we can't be sure they're drug free. Considering some of the people involved, it's a good be they aren't clean at all.
What you're saying isn't true. Year round out of competition testing is conducted everywhere.
Earlier this week the point was made that men who run a 14:15 5000 run around 3:50 for the 1500. Is it unreasonable to think that Dibaba has the potential for a run like this?

She ran well. But the final 50-100 is usually where she shuts down competitors. Instead, she got well beaten by Rowbury, who was a step behind her with 100 to go and beat her by a second.
I am sorry there is NO WAY that she's clean. NO ONE looks this energized after running a major PR. You may be excited, but you're exhausted.
Just watch the end of the race video and you'll see.
Lets see her performances going forward. If this is a one-off and she disappears next year (a la Chinese) or doesn't break 3:53 again, thats pretty much a smoking gun. If she continues at or near this level for an extended period it will be fun to watch.

Not a surprise considering Simpson was essentially the rabbit for Rowbury the first 1400 meters.
