I'm planning on doing one last hard threshold workout about 12 days before my first half. Based on my previous 5k/10k races, I should be good for about 6:15 pace. I've put in some quality work since then, and I would really love to hit 6:05 and crack 1:20.
I would like to get in a solid workout that shows I have this potential. I've been doing up to 5x1mi with 1min rest at 6:10. I've also done 4mi easy then 8mi at 6:30, which felt great - I have a couple more of those coming up, too. These are solid workouts, but not at all race effort. For a harder workout run as a predictor, I was thinking something like:
3x3mi at goal pace, 1min jogging rest
-or-
4x2mi at goal pace, 1min jogging rest
Does something like that provide a good indicator that I'm ready? I'm pretty good at running on effort anyway, but it certainly helps to know how aggressive I can be with those first few miles and still hope to hold on. FYI, I'm around 50mpw now (and have been since February), getting closer to 60 in the final weeks before the race.
