I'm sure that Melissa is pretty happy it. She now has gone sub 2 for the first time this summer. She is now ranked first in Canada and has a new PB.

Had she been in Edmonton like Benson, she would have ran 2:00.x (again), not been ranked first and no new PB. You choose...

Whatever money the winner of that race received likely doesn't even cover the air fair, on-the-ground travel expenses and lodging costs. The various teams (like Brooks Beasts) will go to Europe for a few weeks, base themselves somewhere and then work on putting together a race plan, cobbling together a season from the myriad European meets. If someone performs well enough they may be able to get into Diamond League events. Tough for an independent athlete to do that and perhaps not even worth it.

Still have to get over to Europe, pay for expenses the days you are not competing, actually get into those meets (no guarantees.) Overall, it ends up costing $$$.

Let's say it ends up costing $1000 or so. That's probably how much it ended up costing me (would be less, if not a profit, for Benson and Vessey). You train all year (for many years) for this. Don't you think that Bishop is happy with her PB (which she would not have achieved had she competed in Edmonton)?

Everyone needs to chill a bit. Worlds aren't until mid August. Benson got a late start this season, and raced a ton in June chasing the standard. It's now time to put in a block of training so she can run fast at Worlds.

And that is exactly what is going on....

The winning time in Edmonton was 2:00.XX (slower than her PB). She improved her PB in Lucerne by 0.2, running a 1:59.5 and came third (and there were 5 or 6 women who ran sub 2). Drafting behind someone is a huge benefit in the 800m.

Obviously, Bishop (like anybody with a brain), knew that her chances of finding a fast race in Europe were greater than hoping that Edmonton would be fast. That's why she went to Europe and decide not to run in Edmonton.
