I don't think he even hit the barrier, although he said in the interview that his trail toe made contact.
Not only did he just miss sub-8 there was probably and extra $5,000 for first place.

What an incredible effort and performance by Jager! Although the fall was disappointing, I think this race should give him the confidence and resolve to do even greater things in the remainder of the season, namely: sub 8 min PB and a medal at WC.
This guy is definitely my favorite US runner!

I believe in the interview he said his lead toe clipped the barrier. From the slow motion replay it seems obvious the trail leg cleared fine.
