virin set a wr in the 10k at the 72 olympics after a fall
Whew, took my breath away. Still an amazing race. Just hope he doesn't mentally flip out like Uceny. But he's a fighter to get up and still get a new record. So excited to see what he'll do at Worlds.
I don't know for sure if he was going to run 7:55 but definitely 7:56 af the slowest.
He's #13 in world history right now.

Yeah, but he was a doper.
Unbelievable race. He went for it from the gun and didn\'t care who he was racing. Ballsy and inspiring. Can\'t wait for worlds, the Kenyans need to be afraid.
Remember Montreal 1976, Frank Baumgärtl! Last jump...

probably more like 7:58
Shame about the fall but incredible to see him at the world-class shape he's in. A world champ gold would be incredible to see -- can he do it?

Yes he can.

He did go for it from the gun. He emulated Jordan Hasay. More Americans need to emulate her style. She is fearless.

No way. The race was won in 7:58 and he was 10-15 meters ahead of the winner. Definitely 7:56.
What if this is as good as it gets?
Unfortunately Worlds doesn't have pacers so while he may be the best in the world in a time trial at that point in time, I think one of the Kenyans will be able to close faster than him. I don't really think gold is possible at this point. Just look at 2012 when Kemboi destroyed the field in the last 300m, they know how to maintain form over the barriers and can accelerate better when the time is right. The only way he can win is by making the pace honest all the way or moving hard with a km to go. Even then I think they'd be able to sit and kick.
Great performance . . . ran like a champ! Tough break but he should be very proud. I loved every step of that race. Falls happen but he put it all on the line. Congratulations on a new american record!
As much as Jager is going to hate this - sub-8 will be the only question asked of him from here on out. More so than championship medals.

Yes he can.
He can do it, IF he runs hard from the gun like today. Today's race plan is what he should do, going at sub-8 pace from the first step. He absolutely needs real separation from Kemboi and Birech at the bell. And he can get it.
(He knows he has 7:56 ability, probably 7:55 peaked in Beijing. It won't be any hotter in Beijing than it was today so no slowdown due to heat.)
However, if he gives any quarter and the Kenyans are with him at the bell, it's curtains.
