Jager's race proves why the favorite LetsRun Sports Gene debate does not matter much.
Let's assume some Ethiopians and Kenyan ethnic groups have certain genetic advantages for distance running. Then there are a two possibilities (these are every crude of course):
1. They are so superior that no person not of that group can be one of the top runners in the world.
2. It is 10-100 times more likely that someone in one of the Ethiopian or Kenyan groups will have the super genes necessary to be the best in the world, but there are outliers from other groups of people that have the same genes necessary for distance success.
Jager proves that--even if Sports Gene is right--that we are not in scenario one. There are super freak genetic runners in Bekoji, Ethiopia and Algonquin, Illinois. The best US runners have the genes to be the best in the world. (And, by the way, let's start looking into the water supply of Illinois--Evan Jager, Tim Broe, Jim Spivey, Robert Gary, Craig Virgin, Chris Derrick, Jorge Torres)
It is sort of like being a center in the NBA. You have to be a genetic freak--you have to be over 7 feet tall. And some groups of people are tall (Sudan) and some are short. But most groups have some people who are 7 feet . . So really every part of the world can put centers in the NBA (or have steeplechasers under 8 minutes)
