Continue running and smile at the owner has been fine for me in the decade or so that I've been running on trails. I've encountered countless dogs on the trails and the ones who are off leash are the best behaved ones.

I usually keep running unless the dog chases. If it chases I wait for the owner to get ahold of the dog so that it doesn't run away and get lost.
I encounter dogs on every run at the park I run at, leashed and unleashed. They either get in my way running, bark at me and wanting to kill me, or just run casually with their owner. I get more annoyed with the dogs taking up the trail more than anything. But once in a while I do get afraid when a dog on a leash is psycho and is trying to attack me.
50 State Challenge:
Fully agree. I have been attacked by farm dogs in the past, but never on trails only happy dogs. I understand if you have a fear of the animals but they are just enjoying the trail like you are. I see them all the time and no problems ever. And those who claim to beat these poor animals to teach their owners a lesson are idiots. Is it the dog's fault? Take it out on the owner if you have an issue. It's like beating someone's kids to send a message to their parent. Makes no sense.
:) I will go for a walk soon. It's okay if you throw up. I will probably be nervous too.
Agree that it is the owner's fault, not the dogs.
But if you kick the owner there could be serious legal consequences.
I have been bitten 3 times by dogs on trails. Harassed many other times. Bite=skin broken with blood.
Twice the owners denied their dog bit me, and said I was at fault for running!
(running made dog bite)
This is typical of many dog owners with poorly trained dogs: they walk their dogs off leash on trails thinking they will likely encounter no/few people than when walking dogs in other areas.
Many dog owners think their dogs have a right to run free and harass anything out there. They believe dogs have more rights than people.
Some like it that their dog is aggressive towards others and they reward their dogs for being protective.
I have owned dogs and generally am not afraid, but there are bad owners and bad dogs out there.
Even good dogs can go bad and bite when suddenly frightened by a runner. That is why there are leash laws.
I have had success with aggressive dogs by raising my fist in the universal threat symbol as if I am about to throw a rock. If you can pick up a rock or big stick use that.
Those methods and kicking are warranted in self defense. Rocks and sticks are safer to keep the dog at bay.
If possible, always make contact with the owner and explain the situation. If
you can get a photo of the dog barking/snarling at you, and or a photo of the owner do so. You can ask the owner for their name, but most know they are in the wrong and will refuse to cooperate.
I have also waited at trailheads until the owner/dog returns to get a license plate number to turn into authorities.
Their rights end when their dog invades your space, assaults you, or physically harms you.
