Yes, true. In my defense of Rupp, I realize that I am now bashing True and Hill. That is not really my intent. I just think that Rojo's blatant disdain for all things NOP is nauseating. I realize that professionalism has never been this website's strong suit, but things are really going downhill around here. And this is coming from someone who assumes that the NOP is cheating...

This was nothing like Bumby racing the heat like it was the final. This was a tactical 5000 final, similar to what we usually see at WCs. Rupp did not perform well.

Could Heath still go if True decides to focus on the 10K?

Yeah, I feel bad for Torrence. He was right there with 200 to go, then faded in the stretch. He's 29. Not many more chances to make US teams. Heath is 25 so I don't feel so bad for him.

I get sick of hearing it too but think that Hill's and True's wins were significant (to the extent that any running race is significant). I'm a big Hill fan though so I probably wouldn't care as much if it had been some other guy.

2013 World Champs 5k was won in 13:27 (only 2 seconds faster than True's DL win). 2012 Olympic 5k was won in 13:41 (I'll do the math for you...about 12 sec slower than True's DL win). Sit and kick is pretty typical for championship races.

Hill had a great day. True had the second fastest legs today despite having come in second in the 10k to Rupp on Thursday in tough conditions (which Hill did not race). This shows he has world class strength.

World champs will take both speed and strength to win. The Kenyans and Ethiopians tend to throw in surges then slow down which crushes those who aren't strong. Then it takes a sub 54 sec final lap to podium.

True will be there and since he wont race the 10k, he will have a legit shot at podium, and will almost certainly be the top American.

That is incorrect. Garrett Heath is also 29. His younger brother (Elliott) is 26.

Heath could still be on the team of Ben True opts to run the 10K only, but it seems that True might be more inclined to drop the 10K instead.

Summary: Rupp and true, 2 proven massive dopers lose to a non doper.

Rupp was tired from the 10k and the heat the previous days. He had some serious breathing issues after the finish as well. Still, if you look at previous world/olympic performances, he gets tired from the 10k and is not quite right in the 5's. He was dominant in the 10k, but did not recover fully here. He would have been in better shape, however, with a much quicker pace as what he lacked here was the real pop at the end. Hill looked good and feisty there in breaking out to the outside through two guys, Heath? and True--who he bounced outside. True did very well to come back from the 10k and get another 2nd.

Jon and I in Eugene saw this thread super hot and I said to him, "Do you think this is Robert's thread (meaning he started it)?" We put it at 70%.

We laughed once we clicked on it.
