Former Nike Oregon Project runner Luke Puskedra said he never saw Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar ask anyone in the group to use banned drugs or manipulate prescription drugs to aid performance, nor did he see any NOP runner do so.
"This sucks," Puskedra said Tuesday. "I feel really bad for Alberto. I know he puts so much of himself into his athletes. I'm surprised at how much he took away from the rest of his life to do it. This is his life's work."
Salazar has been accused of doping and pushing the limits of prescription drugs. The allegations have been made by former Oregon Project runners and staff members, and published in a story on the ProPublica website and contained in a documentary by the BBC.
The doping allegations involve Rupp, the U.S. record-holder in the 10,000 meters and the 10,000-meter Olympic silver medalist in 2012.
Puskedra said he has known Rupp since both ran at the University of Oregon, and roomed with Rupp and other Oregon Project runners such as Mo Farah, Matthew Centrowitz and Cam Levins, and former NOP runner Dathan Ritzenhein.
Puskedra said he admired Rupp for "working his ass off" to get the full benefit of his training.
"It's hard for me to believe some of the allegations," Puskedra said.
Puskedra said neither Salazar nor anyone affiliated with the Portland-based Oregon Project ever suggested he use thyroid medication, even though he struggled with his energy levels late in both seasons as part of the training group.
"For someone as rundown as I was, it could have been an option," Puskedra said. "It never was one."
He said he takes Vitamin D, iron and Zyrtec as supplements and did "before, during and after" belonging to the Oregon Project. Xyrtec is an over-the-counter allergy medication.
Puskedra left the Oregon Project in January and moved back to Eugene. He now trains as part of loosely-knit group with former UO runners Trevor Dunbar and Parker Stinson.
He is concentrating on road running. He placed sixth last week in the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 27 seconds
