Yes Yes Yes! I feel exactly the same way. I've run this race for 17 consecutive years, and you're absolutely right. $70 race fee now, and, as a few commenters above me have noted, 1/3 of the field shows up to walk the seven miles (I can testify from experience because I ran for a charity a couple of years ago, and from my back-corral spot I had to shoulder through thousands of people in the first mile who were just walking).
I and my family (most Massachusetts residents, and my parents share property in Falmouth) have been shut out by the lottery more and more recently. And most of us are competitive runners who finish top-100.
I remember the days...15 years ago...when I could actually CALL the race director to register/appeal...contrast that with a few years ago, when I walked in the Falmouth race office to make a personal appeal after (again) getting shut out by the lottery...and I was practically laughed out of the room, and indirectly accused of being some kind of elitist when I suggested that many of the entrants don't intend to actually "run" the race.
It's sad, man - such a great and historic race...with a HISTORY of elites going there to mix it up (Shorter, Rogers, Salazar, et al.). Now it's starting to behave like any other generic overpriced road race.
This race needs qualifying times, just like Boston.
