OP here and thanks, this has been very helpful. I'm going to see what happens with the runner I originally posted about this summer and if he gets to late August in good shape, I'll tell him to let his coach know what might happen if he starts hammering the intervals. On a related note, I'm pretty sure lots of the kids on the high school cc team that I helped out with (I didn't write any workouts), who came into the season undertrained, had decent results 5 or 6 weeks later, then ended up sputtering by the end of the season, just ran their repeats too fast. Kids that were in 17:20 shape were busting out 800 repeats in 2:30 and the coach was encouraging them. If they'd run them at pace, like the workout prescribed, they would have been more effective. Not saying anything new, just something true...
