If there are X grams of red-cell hemoglobin in Y liters of blood plasma, you'll have a hematocrit of X/Y. Adding Z liters of saline increases Y without changing X, thereby yielding a 'crit of X(Y + Z).
The average smallish person might have about 5 liters of blood in his circulatory tree, over half of which -- say 2.8 liters -- is plasma. If an athlete has a 'crit of 50% under these conditions (a highly suspicious figure), adding 0.7 liters of saline would factitiously drop the 'crit to about 40% (a benign figure).
