Only on letsrun can you can critiqued for running a sub-4 mile on high school.

To your first point:
I never said anything about pushing Fisher "to his limit", I don't want this guy to be the next Alan Webb. I'm saying that given that Grant is a senior it seems like Scanlan is needlessly under-training him. IMO Fisher should be doing more proper miler training, not a reckless Alan Webb amount as you seem to think I was implying, but just more than he is doing currently. The kind of workouts Fisher is running right now are similar to the kind of light, just-getting-into-the-sport, not particularly specific type stuff I would expect to see most grade 9's doing.
He's going to be hitting the track hard next year at Stanford anyways so why not prepare him for that a bit better?
Doing quote on quote speed workouts as a HS senior does not equal bad long-term development, as I said, every other damn highschooler ever has done it, it's normal. I feel like this not a point I should even have to mention.
Maybe if Grant was going pro right now, and keeping Scanlan on as his coach for the foreseeable future it would make sense to take this kind of extremely delayed approach, but this isn't the case, so what harm could throwing in a few more proper 1500m workouts in to Fisher's training and properly tapping his insane talent?
To your second point:
What are you even saying? Does every "elite" high schooler like Fisher who does actual mile/1500 training in HS burn out? Well cause' if that's what your're saying then you're obviously wrong, and if it's not what you're saying then, well, you're not really making any sort of point there are ya?
Can we give kudos to roadie Aaron Braun for his fine performance.

I think of the road racers involved in this race Tyler Pennel is the MVP, 2:13 marathon and sub 4 mile within 8 months of each other.
He did this off of a hard double on the weekend.
More speed will be there when he is rested and has another speed session prior to the Dream Mile, then another one prior to Brooks.
Could he do more speed and run faster? Perhaps, but he seems to be doing just fine and he is healthy (not injured) and has another few weeks to race if he runs US Juniors.
Critiquing a HS kid that just broke 4 is a little heavy. Lighten up and rejoice in the fact that the US has two sub 4 HS milers (a first) in one year. Maybe Maton wishes he had a coach that held him back a little more during his season. It would have been great to see both of them in the Dream Mile.
Grant Fisher is one of the all time great HS mid distance and distance runners.

Way to go Grant!
Michigan is proud of you.
Here is a video of the finish.

Think how much Money Flotrack just made off of Fisher.
XC is the largest participation sport in US HS sports. Fisher is a hero to these kids and has an amazing following. Naturally Flotrack and Milesplit hyped this race to the max. I wonder how many new subscribers they got to watch this race because of Fisher?
Congrats to Fisher.
I think it's fitting that he and Maton are tied on the all time list.
it's a shame they never got to race at full strength....
And for all you Fisher fans boys. Maton would have very clearly given Fisher a run for his money at FL if he had not been sick
Fisher with the fastest last lap in the field, noice.
Maton left the Summit program 2 months prior to being injured.
Wow!
A non-doping thread; what has gotten into you guys?
I agree it is delicate balance, but you don't want to leave too much food on the table. I have never met any former great H.S. athlete who doesn't have a story to tell of regret about what they didn't do in H.S., but know they could have.
Ha! OK man, we get it, you aren't a Grant Fisher fan. He's not that good...He's overrated...The fields are weak...etc, etc.But seriously, what makes you think Maton is so special compared to the other mid-season world-beaters? Look, Maton has wheels over 800/mile, and I'm a fan of the guy, but Grant gapped him over the last 150m of the Dream Mile last year.

Rabbit Smabbit.... Is anyone capable on their own or just willing to duke it out anymore?? Pansies.
That's what I liked about the way LV did it back in 2011(?) for the dream mile. It was a high school only race of course and the other guys tried to challenge the last 2 laps, it wasn't the time trial setting we've been seeing. We were actually watching a race play out until his break.
Fisher might very well do the same at this year's dream mile but then I wouldn't understand the need to suddenly (from our point of view) jump in a pro-collegiate mile race to do it. I'd love to see him get another sub four this season, even if it does contradict what his coach was saying at the start of the season
Fisher is more than a year younger than Maton
Fisher has run 2 different 4:00.xx 1600m / 4:01.mid Mile efforts completely by himself (indoor nats and MI state meet in a light drizzling rain). So I hope you aren't implying that Fisher "needs" a rabbit to run fast times. Not many (less than 5?) have run faster in all-high school competition. What's Maton's fastest solo mile? What's Alan Webb's?

The 2011 Dream Mile had a rabbit that took the race out in 57.4. Lukas was under 59. The rabbit stayed in the race until Lukas finally took the lead with 650m to go. He was then he was challenged with 400m to go.
The weather sucked, but the "race setup" was in fact a time trial setting.
