BOOM! #7.
Though when I saw 3:00 posted I thought we were going to see a kick and a faster time. But way to get the job done, Grant.
I agree, well done. But I also thought 3:00 would be ideal for a solid last lap around 56 +/-. I wonder if his legs were more tired than I suspected from that double at state?
Yea, he needs a break! He did it! Time to shut it down for the summer
Not at all, that was a completely measured sub 4
Now run 8:28, he actually can do this.
Consider his splits though. He had the second fastest close in the race (58.4) and ran around 1:57 for the last 800 after going 62,59 foe the first two laps. Great race and maybe could have grabbed another 0.5 seconds or more with a little quicker first lap. Fantastic race! Hopefully great things await Grant at Stanford and beyond.
I have the splits! I was on the infield.
McNamara went with the rabbit the first two laps, Fisher was in about fifth. 60 for the first lap, then 59.
On the third lap, McNamara dropped back in the pack and Fisher began to move up to about third. Coming into the final lap, Fisher was approaching no man's land. McNamara looked out of the race. I unfortunately don't have a split for this lap, but it's safe to assume ~60.
200 to go, Fisher was in second in about 3:29. McNamara was gaining slightly.
Final 100, Fisher pulled near the first runner and McNamara closed hard. The top three were very tight at the finish. McNamara seemingly came from nowhere. My theory is that he did that purposely to test his closing speed.
McNamara was first. Fisher third.
My theory is he didn't want to lose to a HS kid.
I thought that 3 flat with a hard kick would be the way to go for him and he didn't quite have as good a kick here as I had expected (I predicted 3:57), but big congratulations to him are in order! It is an incredible achievement to go sub 4 at 18 in hs, pro and college meets or not. He had to have been a bit tired from that double at states. With good conditions and fresh legs, why not 8:30s in a fast race? 8:28 seems like a huge drop, however.
Congratulations Grant!

Presumably the first split is for 409m, but they were 62.176, 59.983, 58.793, 58.424

Yes, laps were 409m, 400m, 400m, and 400m.
Each lap faster than the last (even backing out the first 9m). Nice. 1:57.22 final 800m.

With Jenny Simpson's DL win earlier, some great races in New England, and the chance for some history in St. Louis, this is an exciting day for our sport even with yesterday's debacle.
Good luck, Grant!
Editor's note: Our recap of this race appears here:
I think Fisher's lack of speed workouts as according to his coach really showed tonight, he could have won this race with a faster close and definitely didn't look like he had much of a kick in the last 100. Going sub-4 in highschool off of kilometre repeats and hills - not to mention only four "speed" workouts across the whole season - is amazing; I'm pumped to see what he can do at the dream mile (and maybe some summer races?) with a couple more speed sessions mixed in there.
I wonder though why Fisher's coach has limited Grant on proper miler's workouts so severely, especially considering Grant is a senior. It's not like Scanlan is going to continue coaching him over at Stanford next year, so why hold back? I absolutely get limiting Fisher's mileage while he's this young - guys like Dressel who push for the 100 mpw mark in HS are morons - but every other High School miler in history has done speed work, its not as if it negatively impacts future development or anything. It just seems to me like wasted potential, like Fisher is just leaving times in the mid 3:50's AT LEAST on the table for no good reason.
I mean no disrespect to Grant or his coach, just my 2 cents.
What did the pacer come through 3 laps at?
You ain't got the answers.
Wut
Two things I want to point out here:1.

So you are saying that because this is the end of this coach/athlete relationship, despite being obviously very far from the end of Grant's career, that his coach should push him to his limit??? Please tell me you are not a high school coach... A focus on long-term development is never a bad thing.

Hm, I can think of more than a few elite high school milers who had their fair share of struggles after high school...
