Absolutely wrong. When they signed with Salazar, he already had a long, long reputation as shady, from the Athletics West history published in the early 1990s, alleging steroid use, to Mary Slaney's testosterone result in 1996, to numerous other issues. Cain signed less than 3 years ago, I believe, in the fall, after Magness had already left the NOP.
Yeah but you wouldn't know that unless you're a LetsRun regular. All the typical newsrags that write about NOP and Salazar never mention ANY of that. If you just googled Alberto Salazar a year or two ago, all that would come up is stuff about his running career and stuff about NOP's success lately, and all the promo-fluff news pieces that have been done about him.
You'd never hear about how AW was a scummy drug-fest, or how Mary Slaney's positive test was under his tutelage, or all the rumors that swirl around about shady practices by NOP members before and after races (being whisked away to a private room immediately before a race, in one instance). That stuff is buried on message boards, just like Lance Armstrong had a sterling public image until it all started coming apart at the seams.

Of course we don't have the facts from Cain, but hopefully no one would be naive enough to think that the announcement of MC's "break" from the NOP & today's scathing news is purely coincidence.
It was supposed to come out last Wednesday, though, and then there was that whole FIFA fiasco.

It does seem possible MC will take a very hard hit from her NOP association. To that extent, I feel badly for her. It seems unfathomable she knowingly doped but if your coach was a WR holder who coached a gold medalist, who wouldn't gobble down any pill or tablet her coach gave her?
Salazar put way too much pressure on MC with his, "She's going to run 3:55" pronouncements. That was insane. Kids are not always cognizant of the gifts God gave them. MC might be thinking "There are only three women in the USA faster than me, Jenny, Rowland, and Shalene. That's good enough for me. I don't want to dedicate myself to the sport as they have."
The parents, however, no way they could not have read up on Salazar, no way could they not have concerns about sending their child 2,500 miles away to train in a high-pressure program with adults who were 5-10 years older than her, It is a shame but I fear MC was robbed of her childhood by adults who could only see dollar signs.
If MC was chewed up and spat out by the NOP machine, and if she has doping allegations hanging over her head for the rest of her life, what Salazar and her parents did to her was borderline criminal.
From The Oregon Project site:
Mary Cain Update May 29 2015
Mary Cain recently completed her first year at the University of Portland
and has returned home to New York to continue her preparations for the
USATF Championships. A few weeks at home with her family will help
recharge her batteries and get her in racing form. She is fit and healthy
and looking forward to the season ahead. Mary continues to be coached by
Alberto Salazar and is a member of the Nike Oregon Project.
Mary Cain admits she is anguished over the recent developments involving her coach and her employer. She will be in "career re-assessment mode" over the remainder of the summer. Due to the overwhelming stigma of having any future involvement with the NOP, Mary will be evaluating her future options.
We at Nike wish Mary all the best in the future. We apologize if there were any misunderstandings.

POD
The COA and spin has begun
So I wonder if there is cause in all this for Cains parents to sue Salazar and the NOP group. He told her lies and got her to turn pro and is now unable to compete at the collegiate level. I would be pissed and after reading about all this stuff I would be out for vengeance against Salazar for taking that away.

Rojo, you're an arsehole. Your anti-Catholic sentiment is totally uncalled for.
Come back when your priests stop diddling kids and covering them up. You could call NOP the Catholic Church of American distance running. The parallels are shocking.

And nonexistent.
I called this a long, long time ago and was scoffed at by the letsrun message board. Looks like I was right all along:

How are you right? Nothing about Mary in that documentary.

What makes you think Cain wants to compete at the collegiate level?
you are misreading the situation.
The Cains thought Alberto would take care of their Mary - sort of in loco parentis. They thought he would keep her on the same long development route as galen and NOT cash in on crazy intensity and miles to get her to the top right away.
And they may not have been be wrong - I think salazar probably treats his rookie 18 year old girl athletes differnetly than is 28 year old athletes.

They don't have the Internet or something?
The stench coming off of Al Sal crosses timezones and has since I don't know when, maybe his own time in elite athletics.
