I think the most obvious reason behind Mary Cain's departure is this investigation and I'm surprised that no one seems to be saying that. It's likely not a coincidence that she decided to leave a couple of weeks before this story came out. The Oregon Project and Alberto Salazar would have known this story was coming for a long time because the journalists reached out to them directly for responses. My guess is that Mary's decision to leave was based on this investigation and not for unrelated personal reasons.
That would make sense if she were running well and if she 100% wanted to be a pro runner a la Alexa Efraimson.
But in fact Cain has been running poorly and she's seemed ambivalent about the pro runner thing for at least a year [recall her very truncated outdoor season last year during which she delayed her debut to go to prom and get her driver's license and cut her season short after world junior to spend time with family.]
I also bet you a a buck that she and her family have had serious concerns about AlSal at least going back to his bizarre behavior in Albuquerque in 2014.
