Was that press release written by a robot? Why doesn't Mary say something in interviews?
The Nike PR department had to rush this one a bit because they are swamped trying to do damage control on Nike's FIFA bribes.
What's a SOM?
The NOP press release today is almost precisely what Ricky Simms, the agent, said in the last sentence of his perfunctory email to Runner's World a few days ago, quoted in the article linked on the Letsrun home page:
"Mary was sick during the indoor season and had to cancel a few races. It wasn’t anything serious—just came at the wrong time. She is training hard now for the USATF Champs and we hope she will be back to her best racing form soon (she doesn’t have any injury problems).”

Yes, it does. It's not even close to a debatable question. It's been proven to as high a level of scientific certainty as is possible.
The math, of course, only works for comparing an athlete to herself. Same engine, different amount of cargo. So you can't point to a fast, bigger athlete to disprove the importance of weight. It's unlikely that a world class athlete, no matter how big she is, has 10 lbs of non-functional weight to lose.
Though it's worth noting that Erin Donohue (who was really not that big--about the size of a soccer midfielder), was an EXTREME outlier in the world of elite running.
I think some people are not wanting to see how simple running is. It's a simple supply and demand of energy. Increasing the demand side means you have to increase the supply side to go the same speed. If you put on fat, and she clearly has (and she looks fantastic and healthy, she's still very lean by normal life standards) then you have to increase power output, which I actually think she has as well because she's clearly put on more than 10 pounds in the past 2-3 years.
Side note...did you used to post as "LaWoof" or something like that?

Had? Ritz is still sponsored by the Nike. He plans to run the Olympic Marathon U.S. trials, and he no longer coached by Salazar.
referring to the point in time that he left NOP.
thinking really isn't that hard.

Welcome to morning practice, weight and flexibility work, mile repeats where the best kids on the team are running your HS PR again and again. Being so tired that you can't even sleep at nights because your own heartbeat is keeping you awake. The drunks on your floor waking you up at 3 AM. Not eating vegetables because the cafeteria food sucks.
Oh-- by the way-- she skipped college running and moved straight to the pros.
Give her time, lads. She'll figure this out.
So why mention college running?
She already successfully transitioned to being a Pro and now she's slipping.
A lot of freshmen are dog meat by the end of the year-- with training that is nowhere near as intense as hers. I know I was.
A summer of mom's cooking, running her home loops, and sleeping in her old bed can work miracles.
Malmo, you might dislike Salazar personally, but you can't deny Cain did spectacularly well with him the 2014 indoor season. The year before she was a World Championships finalist. Not defending Alberto's very real nasty side, but you seem to view Cain as a high school girl. Well, she's a 19 old woman now, which is her main problem, and is into her second year of being a pro. She's under contract. There's no turning back the clock and fantasizing about her being a pure amateur again. That's over -- she made her choice years ago. I wonder if you would have made identical comments about NOP if she was in her late-20s and seemingly on the downside of her career as Shannon Rowbury seemed to be.

You are talking about a male soccer midfielder I hope? World class (Olympic level) female soccer midfielders are definitely not that big. I know that for a fact.

You're wrong. Alberto has always been cordial to me, and I, the same to him.

Amazing how merely pointing out that Salazar (or NOP in general) might not be the best fit for an 18 year old means you dislike the guy.

I think using Erin Donahue as an example in this thread is pretty useless. She's had a powerful physique since she was in high school and visually it looks like her body didn't have a drastic change as she matured. Not to mention, if you've ever met Erin in person, she's not nearly as big as pictures make her look (remember she's running next to waif thin girls).

By way of digression, there are plenty of elite female soccer midfielders about that big. Just on the US roster: Shannon Box... Lauren Holiday... Amy Rodriguez... Carli Lloyd...

Sorry, the cutesy acronym didn't click.
Wow, so many post on how Cain's body has changed.
I posted the same thing two week ago on a different post and I was accused of posting drunk.
Well, from one drunk to all you other drunks, the alcohol makes us see the truth, when a girl become a woman and her body changes she is done being world class runner.😈😈😈😡😇

Yeah, that happened to Kate Upton, too.

Yes, this is why there aren't any world class female distance runners over 20. Oh wait.
