Reminds me of Maricica Puica in '87 WC 3000 where she still won a silver.
She came in with a long list of injuries. Her shoes were lost during travel. She sliced open her thumb while in Rome. In the heats one shoe came off and she tore up the bottom of her foot. Then she took advice to have laser treatment on the bottom of her injured foot. The races are found on Basil Sage's youtube channel. You can see her with a bandaged thumb. In another video I can't find anymore you see her sit down on the infield after the race and take off her shoe and her foot is bleeding.
Bill Jones ran most of the 5k at DIII Nationals with one shoe after losing it in the second lap just two years ago. He still finished second and as far as I could tell after talking to him didn't have any major issues after the fact. What on earth was the track made of (or was it just super hot) at the Big South meet to have done that to his foot?!

Although I guess I forgot he had a sock on, maybe that makes a bigger difference than I thought.
