Actually, even less than that. Pre was probably doing almost exactly my workout. I would assume in his prime he could do his LT workouts at 4:40 pace, or 35 seconds a 200. So 30/40 is exactly what I would prescribe him for his splits.
The main difference is I would have him do say 6x1600 of 30/40's off 60 seconds rest. Whereas Bowerman had him do 15-18 continuous laps of 30/40's, basically until exhaustion. My method is better because he would be able to get more work in at the desired heart rate zone without the "all out" effort.
