I'm unsure why a pair of used spikes would be worth much at all.
Sure, they were used to set a world record, but in a non-olympic event. That record only stood for 46 days.
A gold medal won by Jesse Owens sold a couple of years ago for $1.5 million
a lot of people have a fixation on Bannister, and the spikes do look cool. I agree with rojo that 50,000 seems low given these facts, but it has to be worth way, way less than a the Owens Olympic gold.
