It was an old cemetery out in the middle of nowhere in the woods. Most were born late 1700's. They were a cool piece of history.
Why do you think you deserve a cool piece of history all to yourself? Leave it be. Maybe someone looks up his old relative and finds a physical connection to his ancestors he otherwise wouldn't find.
Or you can put it in your garage and forget about it.
If you are were in Germany, I would say keep it. After 20 years, someone would have nicked the stone anyway. But you are not in Germany. http://www.stripes.com/news/europe/germany/final-resting-place-isn-t-always-final-in-germany-1.109232

At what point is it considered OK to dig people back up ? This happens all the time to the Egyptians etc.
All great people are subject to being dug up. That's why the pharaohs put curses on their mummies. Why Shakespeare put a poetic threat on his gravestone.

If you believe in things like hell, how can we possibly guess what reasons you believe will cause you to end up there?
I tell ya, golf courses and cemeteries are the biggest wastes of prime real estate.
No son, you will not go to hell for stealing the tombstone. But, you will go to hell for all the other things that you have and have not done.
Plan on seeing many LR readers/posters there too.

Yes, they should go to you because you are entitled.
Quite obvious who the millennials are on this thread. Thing is, you will wake up one day and realize you've never worked for anything, believed in anything or stood for anything. You're all alone.
We Gen Xers may have been slackers, but we figured it out. Hope you do too.
Have some respect and stay out of the cemetery.
Yes. That's hell-worthy.
You can steal it as long as you go to church and sit in the confession booth and tell a priest that you stole it. Then you'll be fine.

You'd be surprised how often people end up looking for old graves of family members. There are whole sites devoted to photographing and restoring tombstones for the benefit of genealogists. One of our old family graveyards is actually on an island in Lake Moultrie -- it used to be surrounded by dry ground, but the plantation was flooded when they built the Cooper-Santee hydoelectric dam. You can only get to it by boat now, but some of our family still visits. It would be nice to bring the gravestone back. But take pictures, the place sounds cool!

You do realize that you are required to be truly sorry. Confession gets a lot of s..t, but it's no different than any tradition or legal/civil/financial transaction that requires one to go through particular motions.
The sacrament of Reconciliation can be a very powerful and helpful thing, much like talk therapy or any other catharsis. I'm truly happy you don't need it. Some people do.
Of course you will burn in Hell forever. You will scream in pain for all eternity and Lucifer will laugh at you for giving in to temptation. Just thinking about stealing the tombstone is a mortal sin that will prevent you from entering the pearly gates of everlasting happiness.

Ha! This went right over everyone's head. Nicely done.

Any self-respecting Gen-X'er would have gotten the joke above, which is based on one of the best comedies of our generation.
Right over yer head, eh?
True story: there's a civil war cemetary on the campus of Ole Miss. In the early 1900's laborers removed the headstones to clean the place up but forgot to mark down where each headstone went. Because of this they just dumped the individual headstones in storage and erected a single cenotaph. Yes, bad things happen when people remove headstones.

Exactly.
You don't mess with the dead.
We're all going to be there at some point.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

Thats my point. WHY not? They are dead so who cares, its not like they know. When I'm dead anyone can do anything they want to my body. I obviously wont know nor care.
