Every year Doha throws up super fast times, which is unusual for mid May. I have seen many athletes in the middle distances run their season's best times at this meet, failing to run any faster during the rest of the season. This is strange to say the least!

It's an incredibly wealthy country who managed to get the World Cup and other major sporting events despite having little sporting success themselves.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if there are a lot of 'additional monetary rewards' on offer for fast times or that they are less than thorough with the testing they carry out.

And I bet most of them taking part have just got off the plane from high altitude training 😉

And you are wrong to presume that an indoor time is slower than an outdoor one over 3000m. Many athletes who run on them say they are faster than outdoor, and there is no worries about the weather affecting performance.

Indoor tracks are much faster and banked to counter any effects of sharp bends.

Mo's 7:27/7:28 conversion from his 2 mile run is worth just that. Nonsense to conclude it would be any faster outdoors.

It's almost certain that Mo can improve his 3000m, 5000m and probably 1000m PBs. But it's also fair to say that 7:20 is Komen's greatest performance. He was in arguably 'better shape' in late 97/early 98, and he "only" mustered 7:27 during that time frame (twice).

Another way, in early 98 Daniel Komen ran 7:58 (2 miles) and 7:27 3000m.

Mo just ran, indoors, 8:03.

8:03 is a LONG way from 7:58, and 12:53 is a REALLY long way from 12:39. Mo ran 12:53 and barely out kicked an aged Bernard Lagat in 2011.

I'll be Highly Gebrselassie Surprised if the pacers run either of these 2 races at 1:41.low and 7:22/23 pace.

3:28.HIGH is not 1:41.LOW or 7:22/23. It's not even close.

Oddly, those are MUCH closer to the times I guessed might be run on in my earlier post. They're a far cry from the times you suggested.

And when he DID run his 5k pb he barely beat Old Man Lagat. When he ran 3:28(high) he also didn't win. That doesn't put him at 7:22 shape.

And Hicham was MUCH faster over 1500m and 2000m than Mo. And over 3000m as well. Yet Hicham didn't run 7:22.

He ran in Hechtel and ran 7:27. He also ran indoors in 98, the time period YOU claim he was in "best shape of his life (c. 12:32)" and ran 7:27 then. Same time period he ran 7:58 .. 5 seconds faster than Mo ran recently.

You JUST said ^above^ that he was after the 5000m wr .. here you suggest it was afterthought.

So he was in wr 5000m shape, and 3:43 shape, yet he runs 7:27? and 7:58. And you think Mo is gunna go 7:22?

You missed the point. Mo's a great athlete, and has so many great achievements. But he hasn't done anything that suggests he's going to run 7:22 this week. His 3:28 is a super fast time, but it's 3 seconds behind el G, who ran 7:23 for 3k.Doha is a loaded field, full of guys who all have their eye on Mo. I don't envision that as resulting in the 2nd fastest 3000m of all time. Do you?
